NEW ORLEANS -- Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and coach Jason Garrett said they would like free-agent strong safety Gerald Sensabaugh to return in 2011.
Sensabaugh was hopeful of getting a new contract before the 2010 season, but the Cowboys focused on getting a new deal for wide receiver Miles Austin.
New defensive coordinator Rob Ryan likes Sensabaugh and believes he can make him a better player. Sensabaugh struggled at times last season but finished strong, finishing tied for the team lead with five interceptions. He also tied for third with nine pass breakups.
"We're still in the process of pursuing all of the personnel options," Garrett said on the last day of the NFL owners' meetings. "Again, it's a different kind of an offseason. We have a great feeling, a very positive feeling for Gerald Sensabaugh. He's been a very good football player for us the last couple of years. We like him."
There was a thought the Cowboys might venture out into free agency to get a safety but showed no interest in offering a deal to one of the better players at that position in St. Louis' O.J. Atogwe. But he signed a deal with the Washington Redskins.
Drafting a safety is another possibility, but the safety class isn't considered strong. Jones also said the team would also like to bring back left guard Kyle Kosier, who is also a free agent.
"They are really good football players and I think that says it all," Jones said when asked about Kosier and Sensabaugh. "Those are players that can help us win next year. Certainly that's what we're looking for."
