NEW ORLEANS -- Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and coach Jason Garrett said they would like free-agent strong safety Gerald Sensabaugh to return in 2011.

Sensabaugh was hopeful of getting a new contract before the 2010 season, but the Cowboys focused on getting a new deal for wide receiver Miles Austin.

New defensive coordinator Rob Ryan likes Sensabaugh and believes he can make him a better player. Sensabaugh struggled at times last season but finished strong, finishing tied for the team lead with five interceptions. He also tied for third with nine pass breakups.

"We're still in the process of pursuing all of the personnel options," Garrett said on the last day of the NFL owners' meetings. "Again, it's a different kind of an offseason. We have a great feeling, a very positive feeling for Gerald Sensabaugh. He's been a very good football player for us the last couple of years. We like him."

There was a thought the Cowboys might venture out into free agency to get a safety but showed no interest in offering a deal to one of the better players at that position in St. Louis' O.J. Atogwe. But he signed a deal with the Washington Redskins.

Drafting a safety is another possibility, but the safety class isn't considered strong. Jones also said the team would also like to bring back left guard Kyle Kosier, who is also a free agent.

"They are really good football players and I think that says it all," Jones said when asked about Kosier and Sensabaugh. "Those are players that can help us win next year. Certainly that's what we're looking for."

It must be nice to follow a team with real talent evaluators.

Gerald Sensabaugh sucks. He's a stop gap starter until you can find a guy with talent.

They do? We don't.

He's alright in coverage but he's about the weakest safety in the league. He provides none of the physical play you need to make your defense hum.

Like you mentioned before he's a stop gap starter until we find his replacement and we know what kind of safties are in the draft this year.

I mean wouldn't it be better to keep him this year, and look for our safety in next years draft? I really hate to say that. Now Ball on the other hand, F no!.

Good enough for me.

Maybe he can, I'd rather keep him another year or so until we knew for sure who was taken over for him.

We don't want to plug in another stop gap player. Now on the other side with Ball, we need to replace him.

Ball needs to go back to the corner position where he belongs.

I'm going to be wary about criticizing any of the moves the Cowboys make over the next year or so. I'm putting all my trust in Garrett and Ryan.

If they've reviewed film, and they like Sensabaugh, then I'll buy into it.

If Jesus floated down from Heaven above and told me the same thing I would still be skeptical. Replacing him would not be priority #1 but I find it hard to believe that they surely would not be looking at better options. The B & S combo at safety last year was exactly that....BS.

Replacing him is priority #1?

Ah... no. This is Sensy we're talking about. Not Ball.

Ball is at the top of Mt. Everest IMO when it comes to what needs to be thrown out with yesterdays garbage. My quote was Sensabaugh is not priority #1. Of replacement parts needed he should be on the list but he is not at the head of the line. I like Ryan and believe him as well that he may see some intangibles that would warrant keeping Sensabaugh around. I'm still skeptical with that being said that they would still not be exploring other avenues to find a better option.
