Yesterday was the first game I have attended since they opened the new stadium. I went to alot of games at Texas Stadium and was sometimes critical of the home crowds there, but for bigger games (like Philly in 1992, SF in 1993) the crowds were amazing and the atmosphere was awesome.
I know yesterdays game was against a bad opponent and we were coming off an ugly loss, but geez.
The good:
1) First I wll say it is an unbelievable piece of construction. Its almost awe inspiring to see and walk through. I'm doing the tour today hopefully and will post some other thoughts on this once I get to see everything. The comments people have made about being amazed by the giant video screens are true. I saw people just gawking at it the whole day.
2) Really arnt any bad seats, I think thats something alot of people have said and I would agree. We sat in the upper level about 10 rows from the edge around the 10 yard line, and we had a great view even though we were WAY up there.
3) Cleanest sports stadium I have ever been in, by far. Tons of access to food and drink, while this seems like a good idea, it ultimately isnt (see below)
Now on to the bad.
1) Absolutely, positively the worst group of fans I have ever seen. Anywhere. The fans we sat around were mostly loser assholes. Almost nobody gave a flying shit about the game. People genuinely got perturbed that my friends and I got into the game and were actually cheering the team. People were CONSTANTLY up and down the aisle blocking the view of the field, constantly going back and forth to get food and drinks. I am not kidding when I say I am sure there were tons of people there who had no idea what the score even was.
2) I mentioned the food thing, making access to it was probably great for Jerry's pocketbook, but it really takes away from the atmosphere of the game itself because instad of cheering the team people are spending more time wandering around going to get food or drinks.
3) I've never been at any game where so many dipshit fans couldnt find their seats. I saw at least 12-15 people in the 3-4 hours we were there who were truely lost. They had no idea how to find their place.
4) Eventually the stadium filled in, but at kickoff there were tons of empty seats. They said it was 81k or so there, although I am not so sure that many actually were there.
5) Crowd noise was lousy. Has to be one of the worst home field advantages in sports. Lame, disinterested crowd that spent way more time getting food and drinks, or discussing reality shows (seriously), ths one group of women sat behind us and talked about shopping at the mall the entire game.
Damn shame. Its an amazing place and if they could ever get 80-90k of real football fans into the place they could probably blow the roof off with crowd noise. Texas Stadium was definitely a better pure football venue.
