As the Cowboys collapsed this season, a nation watched it unfold. Five times this year, they played in an exclusive time slot on national television. They lost each game. Stumbling in the spotlight proved costly for the team and its players - none of whom received the most votes at their positions when the results from the Pro Bowl fan ballot were released Wednesday.

Only one Cowboys player, DeMarcus Ware, was a runner-up. With 294,397 votes, Ware finished a distant second to Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews, who received 466,501 votes. Punter Mat McBriar and injured kick returner Dez Bryant each garnered the third-most votes at their positions while Jason Witten finished fourth among NFC tight ends. Atlanta's Tony Gonzalez, Washington's Chris Cooley, and San Francisco's Vernon Davis each fared better than Witten.

Despite the results, the Cowboys may still have some representatives in Honolulu, the site of the game that will be held Jan. 30, 2011. The fan vote accounts for only a third of the selection process.

Ballots cast by players and coaches, who will submit them Wednesday and Thursday, constitute the rest. Only three seasons ago, 13 Cowboys players were invited to the Pro Bowl. In their franchise history, the Cowboys have been excluded from the Pro Bowl twice. That happened in 1986 and 1989.

lol @ Cooley getting more votes than Witten.

Every year Redskins fans make a big effort to mass vote and get their guys in.

It just cheapens the whole process and why fans shouldn't even get a vote.

I always use my one ballot for the guys I think deserve it that year. Regardless of what team they're on.

Congrats to Witten and McBriar if they get in.

Ware can go F himself. He and I aren't friends right now.

I can't stand having the Pro Bowl before the Super Bowl, It's stupid.

Goodell should go down as the worst comish ever. He's come in and fixed everything that wasn't broken. Draft, probowl(I guess it was kinda broken, but he made it worse imo), now he wants to extend the regular season by a few games.

He's the worst.

I wouldn't mind if no Cowboys got voted in, and this team went in with a bit of a chip on their shoulder next year.

LOL. What's even funnier is that if you go to these Redskins' messageboards, almost to a man they propose trading Cooley away for draft pick(s). But let me get this straight... Among TEs, Witten leads not only just the NFC, but the entire NFL in receptions and in yards, and is second to Gates in TDs, which means he leads the NFC in TDs as well---more than twice the # of TDs than Cooley, but somehow he doesn't make the Pro Bowl. Possibly on his way to a third 1,000 yard season.

Witten and Ware both piss me off because of their lack of leadership. They are both stand up guys that garner tons of respect but show little in the way of creating team cohesion. Maybe they want to but don't have the authority to do it but damn I think both should be stepping up big.

You beat me to it.

Goes back to SBK's point about fans voting.

The fans portion is a beauty contest, and a poorly run one.

It's a shame that those fans ruin it for the fans who actually take it seriously.

Who does on this team? Romo doesn't. Ware doesn't. Witten doesn't. Those are your three best players and core Cowboys.

Dez Bryant has some of that Michael Irvin intensity, but I don't know if he can ever be a team leader.

You mean like they did after getting embarrassed by Minnesota in the playoffs last year?
