Oklahoma safety Quinton Carter had only scratched the surface of his interviews with NFL teams when he met the media at the NFL Scouting Combine on Sunday, but it was clear the Cowboys are one of the teams trying to find out as much about him as possible.

He met with Cowboys personnel at the Senior Bowl a month ago, and said the club had recently been in contact with his agent, Kelli Masters.

The 6-1, 208-pounder said he is comfortable playing in the box as well as in deep coverage, convenient for the Cowboys because they could have a need at both safety positions. Strong safety Gerald Sensabaugh is set for free agency, and free safety Alan Ball was often underwhelming in his first year as a starter.

Playing in the Big XII, Carter saw plenty of pass-happy offenses, and said he played a lot of man coverage against tight ends and wide receivers when the Sooners became more of a blitzing team as the 2010 season went on.

For Cowboys fans, it will be hard to not draw a connection between Carter and another former Sooners safety, Roy Williams, the team's first-round pick in 2002. A current member of the Cincinnati Bengals, Williams has reached out to Carter.

"We have a pretty good relationship," Carter said. "I've been really close with him over the past year. He texted me this morning; I haven't gotten a chance to talk to him back. We've grown close. I have a really tight bond with him."
