The Cowboys have interviewed one candidate for the defensive coordinator position and scheduled a meeting with another.
Vic Fangio interviewed with coach Jason Garrett on Monday. San Francisco's Greg Manusky will meet with the club Wednesday.
Fangio spent 24 years in the NFL before joining Jim Harbaugh with the Stanford Cardinal last season. While it's assumed he will follow Harbaugh to the San Francisco 49ers, he was intrigued enough by the Cowboys' opening to meet with Garrett.
Garrett's respect for Green Bay defensive coordinator Dom Capers is well known. But the Packers aren't about to let Capers go. If Garrett can't get the man he wants, it can be argued Fangio is the next best option.
Fangio is a respected Capers disciple. He was a defensive coordinator under Capers in Carolina and Houston and also served in that capacity for Indianapolis.
Fangio was hired by Baltimore in 2006 and spent four years there as a special assistant to the head coach.
The Ravens ranked first, second and third in total defense in three of Fangio's four seasons.
There is a domino effect here. If Harbaugh entices Fangio to San Francisco, that means Manusky is out of a job.
Manusky interviewed for the head coaching job in Carolina over the weekend and will meet with Arizona today regarding its defensive coordinator opening. The other moving part is San Diego.
If Ron Rivera leaves the Chargers to become the next coach of the Panthers, as expected, Manusky is considered a strong candidate to assume Rivera's old position of defensive coordinator in San Diego.
Manusky played in the league 12 years. San Francisco's defense showed steady improvement in his four years as coordinator.
There was also a report Monday that Miami has been granted permission to speak to tight ends coach John Garrett about its offensive coordinator opening. Garrett's contract expires soon.
Surgeries scheduled: Cowboys linebacker Bradie James said the right knee that kept him out of least one practice a week for the second half of the season would not require surgery. But James is scheduled to undergo surgery next week on his left patellar tendon.
Cornerback Orlando Scandrick (fractured left index finger) and receiver Jesse Holley (torn meniscus) are scheduled for surgeries later this week. Guard Travis Bright (foot) had surgery last week.
