Receiver Sam Hurd was stunned to discover that he and Roy Williams were the reason for the Cowboys 15-yard excessive celebration penalty in the loss to Minnesota.
Head coach Wade Phillips gave him the news Monday after a call to the league office.
"I was like man, you can't do nothing,'' Hurd said. "This league is amazing.''
After Williams scored, MIles Austin leapfrogged the receiver and that was thought to be the reason for the penalty. It turns out that Hurd running over and flashing his rock star hand signal while Williams flashed a Hook 'em Horns sign was the reason for the penalty.
The rules state a celebration can be spontaneous.
"That's exactly what it was,'' Hurd said. "It was just celebrating my team.
"That's what I thought the NFL was about. Team.''
Hurd apologized to teammates individually just as Austin did when he thought he was the source of the penalty.
"Stunned but then I apologized to my team, because I felt that hurt them," Hurd said. "Just like Miles felt when he thought it was on him. It's not a good feeling. It's not a good thing to do for your team. You want to be least penalized as a team and it starts with everybody. It starts with me. We will not anymore, in the game, off the game, whatever."
Several Cowboys said all you may see on touchdowns now are handshakes.
"You may not even get those,'' Hurd said. "You just get a wink now that you did a good job.''
The funny part of Hurd getting the penalty for the dual Hook 'Em Horns is that Hurd didn't even do the hand sign correctly.
His thumb was extended.
"I'm terrible with it," Hurd said. "It was my 'rock star.' I always do the 'rock star' sign. That's what happens in the NFL. They're cracking down on celebrations, so we just don't need them."
