The Cowboys needed to get their run game going to keep the pressure off of backup Jon Kitna.
It never happened.
Tony Romo's fractured clavicle made it imperative that the Cowboys establish something on the ground. But the Cowboys finished with just 41 yards on 13 carries. Felix Jones had 35 yards on nine carries and Marion Barber scraped together just six yards on four carries.
"We wanted to run the ball when our backup quarterback came in and we didn't do that very well,'' head coach Wade Phillips said. "That put a lot of pressure on him to throw the ball earlier than we wanted to and not do the play action.
"I think Jon warmed up as the game went along, but he was rusty for awhile.''
Monday marked the second consecutive game -- and the third time this season -- the Cowboys have been held below 100 yards on the ground.
The Cowboys are averaging 86 yards rushing this season to rank No. 30 in the NFL. Only Detroit and Denver have been worse.
