The Dallas Cowboys received a seventh-round draft choice on Friday as the NFL handed out compensatory draft picks.

A total of 21 picks were given to teams whose free-agent losses last year were more valuable than their additions, as determined by a formula. Carolina did the best, receving a third-round choice that will be the 97th pick overall.

The compensatory rule requires that 32 extra picks overall be handed out. The remaining 11 were determined by draft order. The Cowboys, who have the ninth overall pick in next month's draft, received selection No. 251. There will be 253 picks overall.

The Cowboys gave up a seventh round, choice No. 212 overall, in this draft a year ago when they selected defensive lineman Josh Brent in the supplemental draft.

Two picks ahead of Mr. Irrelevant.

Still nice. At that point in the draft you've already moved on to undrafted guys. Working the phones to get them committed. It gives us the opportunity to lock down one of our targets on the UDFA list. Maybe someone they'd like to have but have some competition to get him.

Calling my shot now. With that compensatory pick we will draft Antwine Perez, SS, Maryland. Or someone else.

Given the Cowboys track record with drafting, whomever they select with that pick will probably be more relevant down the road than our selections in the 3rd or 4th round.

Comp pick's can't be traded if memory serves, correct?

This is good news. As pointed out, we've done well with late round picks lately. And at the very least, this increases our rookie signing pool.

No, comp picks cant be traded. They must be used by the team who has them.
