The Cowboys' player-run workouts are expected to resume in late July, but it's possible they won't be held again if training camp starts on time next month, according to team members who are familiar with the plans.

During a typical offseason, clubs don't conduct workouts or practice in the weeks before they reconvene for preseason preparations. In 2009, for instance, the Cowboys finished their set of organized team activities and mini-camps June 18.

Hopeful that a new collective bargaining agreement can be finalized in the near future, the Cowboys' players have tried to maintain a normal schedule in the event the lockout ends before the beginning of training camp, which will start the last week of July.

Last month, quarterback Tony Romo, who organized the player-run workouts, said that approximately 45 players had participated in the sessions conducted at an undisclosed location in the Dallas area.

The large turnout, in part, could be attributed to the fact that many of the team's players reside in the Metroplex during the offseason.

While Romo was the point man, he delegated certain responsibilities to the team's other established veterans, including offensive tackle Marc Colombo, tight end Jason Witten, and linebackers Bradie James, Keith Brooking and DeMarcus Ware.

Even though none of the team's eight drafted rookies took part, the consensus among the Cowboys' players is that the practices unified a team that hopes to cue a turnaround after finishing with a 6-10 record last season.

But for now, those player-run workouts have been suspended. And they may never resume if the lockout ends and the Cowboys reconvene next month for training camp.
