Cowboys on look out for receivers
July, 29, 2012

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys are not keeping their intentions at the wide receiver spot a secret as training camp begins.

They are looking for help.

They put a fourth-round bid in the supplemental draft on Baylor’s Josh Gordon two weeks ago, only to see him get picked by Cleveland in the second round. Last week they made a waiver claim on Dezmon Briscoe, a Cedar Hill grad, only to lose out to Washington in the process because the Redskins had a worse record in 2011.

“I think that’s more than anything youth,” executive vice president Stephen Jones said. “We have Miles (Austin) and Dez (Bryant) we’re counting on, then we’ve got a lot of unknowns after that. We know that. We’ve got young guys we think a lot of … I think that’s a place we’ll watch hard. We’ll watch the guys we have here. As Jason (Garrett) mentioned, player acquisition is a year-round deal.”

Kevin Ogletree is the only receiver on the current 90-man roster with a catch in a regular-season game. The Cowboys liked what they saw from youngsters Andre Holmes, Dwayne Harris, Cole Beasley and Tim Benford in the offseason work but were unable to get a long look at fifth-round Danny Coale because of a stress fracture in his foot.

“Our goal is we’re going to feel better about the wide receiver corps after Miles and Dez when camp is over,” Jones said, “whether we do that with the guys on our roster or the way we did last year, picking up a guy like Laurent (Robinson) toward the end of camp. We feel like we can get that done.”

Bob and I are gonna try out. We can't be any worse than the current collection of nobodies they're fielding.

This team just does not like developing young players.

Yeah, I mean we throw away players like Tony Romo and Miles Austin. And that Kevin Olgetree, we never gave him any chance in Hell. And that TE Phillips, who does he think he is? We are constantly just throwing away young players and bringing in old guys when the Young ones would have done just as well. HAHAHAHAHAAHA Ok just had to stop I was laughing way to hard.

I remember having high hopes for guys like Jermaine Copeland, Chris Brazzel, Darrin Chaverinni, and my personal favorite... Ken Yon Rambo.

Good times.

What do you think about the yanks this year?

I'm alone on this one..but I think their lineup will hold them back.

I thought they were toast when Mo went down but they've surprised me. Their fat lead in the AL East means they can weather the loss of Pettitte and A-Rod for the next month or so. My biggest concern is if they lose Game 1 of the WC round, because Sabathia hasn't exactly been dominant this year. They're also a little too homer reliant, so hopefully guys like Ichiro can help them manufacture runs with small ball.

No? Austin Crayton Hurd Dez Ogletree Holley still no?

Hurd?

Ogletree?

Holley?

What did they develop into? 1 really solid special teams player, 1 guy who's career is basically defined by how much huch he praised the heavens after his 1 big play, and 1 guy who is basically the dumbest player on the team.

You don't "develop" 1st round picks, either. You plug them in and let them play.

Austin is the only player on that list that Dallas truly developed.

Crayton could qualify I guess but he was sent packing for a bag of peanuts.

Oh, and if they're so awesome at developing WRs, why in the hell are they looking outside of the club for more help?

This is fucking sickening.

Dallas had a good #3 WR in Robinson but instead he goes elsewhere while Spencer gets the tag and apparently is seeking out a payday like Ware.

Executive vice president Stephen Jones said that does not mean Spencer does not have a long-term future with the Cowboys.

“When you’re not quite on the same page with each other, I certainly appreciate, understand and respect that,” Jones said. “He’s more on the DeMarcus (Ware) side of the money and we’re more on the other side so there’s a big gap. Let’s see if we can close the gap one way or the other.

Get the fuck outta here with that shit.

think you might want to reread what i commented on. I didnt say they amounted to anything. But they developed them for yrs. Wether they amounted to shit is on them. But Dallas kept them on for yrs and developed them to players would could stay in the nfl. And once let go by Dallas(hurd, crayton holley) all caught on with other teams. Hurd just got caught by the law. So to say Dallas doesnt develope young wrs is horse shit. Holley is true evidence for you.

Not alot of teams develop ho hum guys likeHurds, Holleys and Ogletrees either. Those guys are end of the roster players, although Holley and Hurd were at least both outstanding special team guys, which is about as much as you can expect from them.

Crayton was a very solid player for us for several years, we did develop him. He was a small school QB drafted in the 7th rd, and turned into a very dependable #3/borderline #2 guy for several years.

I'm not talking about developing young players per se, just the idea that we can't ever rely on those players to play key roles for us, and instead riding aging vets who are obviously broken down to where it becomes a huge detriment to the team.

So 4th and 5th players on the depth chart such as Ogletree, Hurd, Holley do not apply.
