SAN ANTONIO -- The Cowboys have opened up contract talks with first-round pick, tackle Tyron Smith.

Talks have progressed so well, that Smith is scheduled to catch a flight this afternoon so he can be here to participate in training camp practices, which start Thursday, in case a deal is completed.

Players had to report to camp by 11 a.m. today, attend some meetings and pass conditioning drills.

Smith, the ninth overall pick of the draft, is projected to play right tackle this season.

While he's expected to, it's uncertain if Smith will start. The team is also trying to rework the contract of last year's starting right tackle Marc Colombo. If Colombo does not restructure his deal, sources say he will be released.

The Cowboys have a first year rookie pool fund of $5.7 million to use.

Cut Davis who played better the second half of last year, but hold onto the biggest piece of shit on the offensive line?

Makes a whole lotta sense to me.

If they keep him and start him over Smith I'll personally fly to Dallas and kick Jerruh in the nuts.

I have no problem with them cutting Davis, but I see your point.

He sucks but I'm not gonna bash him. He's played with a lot of intensity over the years. Maybe they feel he can regain some of what he's lost if he's healthy.

Keep him because he could serve as a quality swing tackle.

Colombo cannot be a swing tackle...he can barely stand up at RT, he'd be an absolute disaster at LT

The only way I could see him making the team is if a number of other guys get hurt

SJ said he's pretty confident all the rooks will be signed and in practice tomorrow
