Rookie WR Dwayne Harris made a nice diving catch in the end zone during a passing drill.
Undrafted rookie CB Mario Butler shined throughout Tuesday’s practice. He covered WR Kevin Ogletree all the way downfield on a deep throw by QB Jon Kitna. Butler also batted away three passes. He deflected two that were thrown toward Raymond Radway — one on a fade route in the end zone and another when he dived to break up a pass on a crossing route. He also punched away a pass near the goal line that was intended for Manny Johnson.
On the first play of team drills, WR Miles Austin, who returned to practice for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury Aug. 16, ran an end-around. But he was met in the backfield by CB Orlando Scandrick.
OLB DeMarcus Ware botched an interception when he failed to corral a pass thrown by QB Tony Romo that was intended for WR Dez Bryant on the second play of team drills.
During team drills, running backs Tashard Choice and DeMarco Murray each touched the ball for the first time within a span of three plays. Choice and Murray each caught passes.
After making a catch near the sideline and crashing to the turf, TE Jason Witten gingerly walked back to the line of scrimmage while clutching his left hamstring. He returned to action shortly thereafter.
RB Felix Jones appeared to hurt his hand early in team drills. He sat out a few plays and even retreated to the bench at one point before returning.
TE Martellus Bennett made a nifty catch on a poor pass by Kitna, who rolled to his right and threw across the field. Bennett tipped the ball to himself, then grabbed it while being surrounded by defenders.
On a pump-and-go pass from Romo to WR Jesse Holley, S Gerald Sensabaugh almost made an acrobatic interception. But he was unable to corral the ball. Later, Sensabaugh deflected a pass from Romo that was intended for Ogletree.
At the end of practice, the Cowboys recreated a scenario in which they had to rapidly move the ball downfield in limited time. The defense lined up in a prevent-style formation, and on the last play of practice, Romo heaved a deep pass that was intercepted by CB Bryan McCann.
A snap delivered by C Phil Costa, who had some work with the first team Tuesday, was fumbled by Romo.
With the pocket collapsing around him and no receiver open, Romo tucked the ball and fell to the turf. OLB Anthony Spencer was coming around the edge.
