Cowboys Mailbag: Why would Green Bay let Jimmy Robinson out of his contract?
Cowboys Mailbag
Why would Green Bay let Jimmy Robinson out of his contract right after winning a Super Bowl?
(Editor's Note: Each day we will take the 2 best questions for our staff writers to answer from the Mailbag.)
PHIL FARRAR - FRISCO, TX: Jimmy Robinson looks great on paper, with an outstanding background. So why would Green Bay let him out of his contract right after winning a Super Bowl?
Nick: Great question. Wish we had the answer to that. Maybe the Packers have someone else in mind or maybe they see some value with him getting the assistant head coach title. Without getting to talk to him yet, it's hard to tell. I have met him in the hallway and he seemed genuinely excited about this opportunity. Maybe he just needed a change and the Packers were willing to grant it. But that's a good question.
Josh: Even without having seen the details of his contract, I would almost guarantee you he's getting a pretty significant raise to come down here. He may have simply told the Packers he wanted to leave, and, feeling like he had done enough for the organization and recognizing the opportunity he had in Dallas, maybe the Packers just decided to let him go. Considering the performance of that receiving corps, I doubt they were pushing him out the door.
ROLAND BELL - FAYETTEVILLE, AR: If Texas A&M outside linebacker Von Miller drops to No. 9, do you think the Cowboys would take him?
Nick: That's a tough one. He's the type of player I could see the Cowboys taking. He's an athletic playmaker on defense, from a Texas school. He's played three games at Cowboys Stadium in two years so the scouts should know all about him. Still, I just wonder what position he's going to play in the NFL. Although his height/weight vary on different websites, he told us at the Senior Bowl that he's about 235 pounds and he's probably no taller than 6-2. If you look at the team's inside backers, it's mostly guys around 6-2 and 6-3 and about 240-45 pounds. The two starters at OLB - Ware and Spencer are both around 260 pounds. I just wonder if he's a good fit for the Cowboys because he's probably a 4-3 outside linebacker in the NFL. I think his size says he's probably an inside backer for a 3-4 and that might not utilize his talents too well. If he does play outside backer in a 3-4, it'd probably be as a situational pass-rusher, and that's not worth the No. 9 pick. So I just don't think he's a great fit for the Cowboys. Great player, but maybe not a great fit here.
Josh: I don't think so, because I don't think they're ready to give up on Anthony Spencer. Now, Miller's college career suggests he'll be a better pass rusher than Spencer, but what about first and second down? Maybe he could be an inside linebacker, which I think the Cowboys could use, but they would have to be sure of that to select him so high, and I don't know if you can just learn that position in a few months.
