The athletic ability of cornerback Josh Thomas, of Cedar HIll by way of the University of Buffalo, figured in the Dallas Cowboys' decision to take him in the fifth round of the draft. At the NFL scouting combine, Thomas tied for second among cornerbacks with a vertical leap of 38 1/2 inches. Texas' Curtis Brown topped the 35-corners field with a jump of 39 1/2 inches.
That Thomas had an eye-catching jump did not surprise the Buffalo staff. Thomas' leaping ability stood out during his four seasons with the Bulls. He deflected 17 passes in his final two seasons.
"We kept telling scouts the story about when he jumped so dang high he hit his head on a light fixture and he took 15 stitches," Buffalo coach Jeff Quinn said. "He's got some springs in his legs. Very explosive. Very competitive. All the things you look for in this great game."
Thomas had only one interception in his final two seasons at Buffalo. Thomas said on Saturday that of his 17 deflections in that span, he dropped what were in his mind at least six interceptions. Thomas blamed himself for not adjusting to the ball in flight and has concentrated on correcting that technical error in pre-draft workouts.
