SAN ANTONIO -- Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said the team likes fifth-round draft pick cornerback Josh Thomas of Cedar Hill. The rookie out of Buffalo has been up and down in camp so far, but like everyone else, he's trying to grasp the defense while also processing so much more.

"What we've seen from him is what we thought he was going to be coming out of school. He's a kid who is really tough. He's very passionate about the game. You see that in everything that he does," Garrett said. "We had the chance to visit with him at Dallas Day because he's a local kid. We spent some time with him then and it did follow what we saw on tape. He, like a lot of young guys, there's a lot of stuff coming at him quickly. Not only does he have to process this stuff but he also has to guard Miles Austin, so those are tough challenges."

Garrett said he likes the way Thomas has responded in camp when he's struggled.

"He's responded well and he seems to have bounced back anytime there's some adversity or things don't go well. He steps right back up there and keeps battling and keeps competing," Garrett said. "That's a great thing for all players but particularly when you play corner in this league, so we like what we've seen so far but obviously he has a long way to go."

Good turn around, considering a couple days ago he seemed completely lost. Coming out of the draft, this was one of my favorite picks.

Some may regard this as fluff piece. But I don't think Garrett does fluff. If Jerry was saying this about Thomas, I'd be skeptical and probably dismiss it in its entirity. But if Garrett is saying it, then I take it for what it's worth.
