Cowboys Identify Defensive Coordinator Candidates
by Brett Perryman • Jan 11, 2011 12:00 PM CST

We're getting a better idea of the Cowboys' list for their vacant defensive coordinator job under Jason Garrett. We can start with two undisputed facts. One is that Todd Bowles has been in an office with Jerry Jones. The other is that Garrett has interest in Mike Nolan. Todd Archer and Calvin Watkins identify two more potential candidates: Greg Manusky and Vic Fangio.

Manusky was the coordinator of San Francisco's 13th ranked defense in 2010. They ranked 16th in points per game and struggled to force turnovers. Archer and Watkins note that the Cowboys tried to hire Manusky as Wade Phillips' first DC but couldn't bring him over from San Diego.

Fangio was with Jim Harbaugh at Stanford, so there could be an interest from Harbaugh in taking him to the 49ers. He has over a decade of experience running 3-4 defenses in the NFL and was with the Ravens until this season.

Bowles and Nolan are involved in a turbulent situation in Miami, where owner Stephen Ross has been to the doorstep of replacing their boss and backed off. Paul Pasqualoni served as defensive coordinator for the Cowboys during the second half of the season but does not appear to be a prime candidate for the permanent job.

Garrett allowed his brother John, who is soon to be fully available, to talk with the Dolphins about their offensive coordinator job, but denied the Texans the opportunity to bring over Reggie Herring in a lateral move. Herring has a contract for 2011.

I read this article earlier and was going to post it. But then I realized it contained not an ounce of new information.
