For the fourth time in five seasons, the Cowboys are getting ready to face a Mike Martz directed offense.
In 2006 and '07, he was Detroit's offensive coordinator. In 2008, he was with San Francisco . Now he is in Chicago.
The Cowboys went 2-1 in the previous matchups, but Martz was able to have some success. In a 39-31 loss to close the '06 season, Jon Kitna threw for 306 yards and four touchdown passes. Roy Williams and Mike Furrey had more than 100 receiving yards. A year later, the Cowboys clinched the NFC East with a win at Ford Field, but needed a miraculous finish. Kinta threw for 248 yards and the Lions had 390 yards on offense and were 7 of 14 on third down.
In 2008, Shaun Hill threw for 303 yards, with 125 of them going to Isaac Bruce, but the Niners could not run the ball and converted on just 2-of-10 third down tries.
"You've got to defend every inch of the field," said Kitna, now the Cowboys backup. "There's not a place he's not going to attack. It's almost uncanny how he can predict what he's going to get from the other team on defense on a certain play."
In Jay Cutler and Matt Forte, Martz has a strong-armed quarterback and decent runner, but the line is suspect as are the wide outs.
"His game plan sheet is large now and so he's going to have a plan for what he's seen on film but also have a backup plan in case of what you do on Sunday is different," Kitna said. "He's very multiple that way. When he has players that are willing to accept the demand to learn it all, that's when it becomes special. We had that for a little while but it got to the point where I think some guys said, 'Ah, it's too much for me. I don't want to put the time in to study that much.' That's when we started to struggle."
