Notes: High school teammate of Tim Tebow. As a true freshman in 2007, saw limited action in 12 games and was credited with three tackles, zero pass breakups and zero interceptions. Started all 13 games in ’08, producing 41-4-1 with 3½ tackles for loss. Sprained an ankle against Virginia Tech but was in the lineup the following week. Started all 14 games in ’09, logging 45-3-2 with 4½ tackles for loss. Started every game for a third straight season in ’10, posting 48-6-1 (85-yard TD against Duke) with two tackles for loss and a forced fumble in 13 games. Did not bench-press at the Combine because of right shoulder tendinitis.
Positives: Good height. Quick feet and good short-area quickness. Reacts quickly in off-man coverage. Anticipates and jumps routes. Plays hard and is confident and mentally tough. Durable and takes care of his body — maintains less than five percent body fat.
Negatives: Very thin and underdeveloped physically. Has short arms and small hands. Below-average speed. Is not a fluid mover — has a choppy pedal and does not transition smoothly. Is not sudden in and out of breaks — loses separation at the break point and makes wide turns. Stressed by speed and explosive receivers. Bites on double moves and cannot recover. Is not physical — turns down contact. Low tackler. Marginal ball production.
Summary: Try-hard, confident zone corner who runs like a safety, lacks athletic traits and is too often a step late. Will have to excel on special teams to compete for a reserve spot.
NFL projection: Priority free agent.
