ARLINGTON – Jason Garrett, installed as the Cowboys head coach, issued a warning to his players Thursday.
Be ready for a training camp far more demanding than last summer's.
"You have to earn it in training camp," Garrett said. "You lay the foundation for your football team in training camp. So it will be a physical training camp, it will be a demanding training camp.
"When we come out of it, we're going to feel like we're ready to embark on the challenges of a 16-game season."
Former coach Wade Phillips kept contact to a minimum during last summer's' training camp. The Cowboys responded with a 1-7 start, which led to Phillips' firing.
Garrett refused to say whether he likes having camp in multiple cities, which owner-general manager Jerry Jones favors as a marketing tool. The Cowboys last summer were the only NFL club to have camp sessions in three different cities: San Antonio, Irving and Oxnard, Calif.
Jones said late in the regular season that the Cowboys will continue with the multi-city camp format.
Houston interested in Herring: Houston asked for permission to interview Cowboys' linebackers coach Reggie Herring.
The Cowboys are expected to grant the request, clearing the way for Herring to re-join Wade Phillips. The Texans on Wednesday hired Phillips as their defensive coordinator.
Herring coached the Texans' linebackers in 2002-03.
Parcells frugal with Cowboys honors: The NFL Alumni association had former Cowboys coach Bill Parcells pick three finalists in 11 categories – nine positions, coach and player of the year – to be voted on for year-end awards. Parcells included only one Cowboy among the 27 players: Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten.
Briefly: Garrett and Hall of Famer Tom Landry are the only head coaches in Cowboys history to have also played in the NFL. Landry played defensive back and punted for seven seasons with the New York Giants. Garrett was a backup quarterback for eight seasons with the Cowboys, the Giants, Miami and Tampa Bay. ... The Cowboys re-signed all eight practice-squad players under future contracts.
