IRVING -- Cowboys fullback Tony Fiammetta, who has been a catalyst for the team's improved running game over the last month, won't play Sunday at Washington because of an illness he's been battling all week, coach Jason Garrett said Friday morning.

Garrett said the Cowboys aren't sure exactly what kind of illness Fiammetta has at this point.

"We're trying to get to the bottom of what it is. He's been sick all weeklong," Garrett said. "We're just kind of monitoring those symptoms and we're just going to continue to do that and see what the origin is."

Garrett said the Cowboys are still trying to decide how they will fill in for Fiammetta, but earlier in the season the Cowboys primarily used tight end John Phillips at fullback and that's certainly an option. The Cowboys could also call up fullback Shaun Chapas, the rookie out of Georgia, from the practice squad.

"That's a conversation we're still having right now," Garrett said. "Chapas is certainly someone we're considering. John Phillips has the versatility to play some of that stuff. We'll evaluate that over the next 24 hours."

Garrett said it's too soon to rule Fiammetta out of the Thanksgiving Day game against Miami on Thursday despite the quick turnaround after the Cowboys play Sunday at Washington. Garrett said the Cowboys will continue to evaluate Fiammetta and make that decision next week.

A mysterious illness? The team doesn't know what's wrong with him even after a week? Odd, to say the least.

Sounds like Shaun Chapas may get promoted. I would think if they decide Fiametta is unlikely to play Thursday vs Miami it'd make it more likely Chapas would be signed to the active roster.

Why? He sucks.

We'd be better off just having a TE line up in the backfield.

I agree. I'd rather have Phillips blocking for us rather than a guy like Chapas who hasn't played much.

He was really good at UGA, just because he didnt have a great preseason doesnt mean he is bound to suck forever. He probably understands the offense alot better now than he did back in TC.

He's the better option than Chapas at this point. IMO

You can't put Marty B's fat ass back there.

Bennett is better as an in-line blocker, no doubt about that.

Phillips is not a good lead blocker at all. He just doesnt have the agility or the pad level for it. Whiffs too much.

Agility has nothing to do with playing fullback or they wouldn't be fullbacks. You're right about the pad level though. He's just too tall, not many TEs can get enough leverage to lead block at those heights: Martellus being one of the only exceptions, but he isn't called on to hit the hole and crackback on a LB.
