We continue to give you an inside look at the Cowboys draft picks:
FB SHAUN CHAPAS
Ht., Wt.: 6-foot-2, 247
School: Georgia
Round:Seventh (220th overall)
Fullback Shaun Chapas was often used in the passing game while at Georgia.
To learn more about Cowboys draft pick Shaun Chapas, we talked with Georgia running backs coach Bryan McClendon. Here's what he had to say:
What was the main thing you liked about Shaun?
McClendon: Shaun is always a guy who has his priorities straight. He will have no problem getting adjusted to that league. No matter what he's trying to do -- paper boy, anything -- a lot of his life will be about preparing for it. He will be ready. He's a natural leader and a great teammate who plays how you want it to be played. You wish you have a team full of Shauns because of how he deals with the game and how he respects his teammates.
You guys passed to Shaun a lot at Georgia. Why?
McClendon: Some people look at fullbacks as glorified offensive linemen. He's a good athlete and we did plenty of good things with him. We threw to him on screens, handed him the ball. He could go left, right and straight up. We would throw checkdowns to him, and he would score off them. That tells you a lot about the type of player he was. He's not the quote unquote typical fullback who just blocks. He has the ability to catch the ball, and we always look for him in the passing game.
Did you think he could play in the NFL?
McClendon: We figured he had the ability to play at the next level. He was a guy who worked his butt off and he worked hard on special teams. You know he understands to play in the NFL, you got to do that when you play at fullback. When he was a redshirt freshman he started on all special teams and got better and better. When Brandon Sullivan broke his foot, we plugged him in at fullback and never lost the job since. A fullback doesn't get on the field every down and he understands that, we all understand that, but he will get out there and play like he is playing every down.
NFL teams don't normally draft fullbacks. What does it say that the Cowboys drafted him?
McClendon: It's not a popular thing, but to me it speaks volumes about his abilities and he is a person who can learn. He has the abilities to be a long-term player in the NFL. I'm not worried about whether or not he can play in the NFL. I know he can have a long career there just by how he dedicates himself to the game.
