Cowboys draft busts: Felix Jones? Bobby Carpenter?

The NFL divisional bloggers took a look at the last five drafts and determined who was a bust, who is nearing the basement and who was the best pick.

Mike Sando did the NFC East and said Mike Jenkins was the best draft pick of the last five years for the Cowboys and Bobby Carpenter was the biggest bust. Sando said Felix Jones is nearing that status.

Here's more on the NFC East.

My own point of view would disagree on the biggest bust of the last five drafts for the Cowboys.

James Marten, a 2007 third-round pick from Boston College, didn't play a regular season game for the Cowboys and was cut.

The best draft pick of the last five years is a tie between Dez Bryant, though he didn't finish the season, led the team in touchdown receptions before his season-ending injury and Mike Jenkins, who did earn a Pro Bowl berth in 2009. Jenkins struggled last season but has the skill set to bounce back.

On the bubble for the worst draft pick is Anthony Spencer. He was a first-round pick in 2007, and has yet to play on a consistent level. He needs to have a much better season in 2011 than he did last year to take some pressure off DeMarcus Ware. I would say Carpenter is right up there with Spencer, but I think the Cowboys drafted a player who couldn't fit into their 3-4 defense. Carpenter plays better in a 4-3 scheme.

Felix isn't a bust unless you compare him to Chris Johnson whom I personally touted for us to draft way before most of you jakes even knew who he was.

Calm down sir. if you were on the site that shall not be named you would have seen my mocks had us going Chris Johnson and DeSean Jackson that year. I was told how small they were, how their speed won't translate, etc.

Off subject, I take it those are your Bulldogs? I almost got one last week in LA, but it was a female. Instead I lined up a Rottweiler pup and a Weimaranier pup. Should have them by May.

Both were bad picks. Carpenter a total bust. Felix poor value.

I never liked Carpenter. I did like Felix. Even though he's got an inferior line to deal with and the nonsense of Jerry, I think it's pretty clear there were better backs on the board. Several, actually.

I won't go as far to say FJ is a bust, our offensive line is pathetic.

Bobby Carpenter? Oh hells yes, the biggest boob there is. I blame Parcells and Jerry for that one.

If Felix keeps going the way he's going then he'll be a bust as much as Marcus Spears is... We never got the return of the 1st round pick but will have a decent quality player on our team.

Spears isn't a bust.

People use that term too loosely.

Thats why I said Felix will be one as much as Spears is.. If that makes any sense.

When you think of what you should be getting out of the first round and what we gotta out of Spears, its a big disappointment. I was expecting a dominating player a lot like Seymour the way Spears was hyped up.

That doesn't mean I think Spears is horrible, just not worth the 1st rounder. That year we got a better player with Canty in the 4th round.

As far as Felix goes... I was never crazy about selecting him in the first. He's a RB who will never be a full time starter in this league. Now here we are a couple years later without a number 1 RB on roster.

The difference with Felix is he had several backs selected after him that have out produced him. Some of that is the situation they're in, but you can't totally dismiss it.

I don't think you can say the same about Spears. He hasn't been out shined by several 3-4 ends of his own draft class.

There's not a question in my mind that if Felix went to a Green Bay or Philadelphia, he'd have better numbers.

Oh, if we had a better OLine here Felix would have better numbers... but I still don't think he'll be a full time starter. He'll always be one of those 'running back by committee' type of backs.
