Dan Bailey smiled as he left the field Friday at the Alamodome. He had a reason to be pleased. For the second consecutive day, he converted all five field goal attempts from varied distances.
“It’s been a good experience so far,” said Bailey, an undrafted rookie from Oklahoma State who won the 2010 Lou Groza Award. “But I can’t get too ahead of myself.”
Still, Bailey’s performance has been encouraging. It’s also put the incumbent starter, David Buehler, on notice. Since training camp began, he has missed three field goal tries while Bailey has connected on all 10. Even though he dealt with two bad snaps Friday, Buehler, who was drafted in the fifth round by the Cowboys in 2009, refused to make excuses.
“You have to come out and perform,” Buehler said. “Dan’s a good kicker. I’m going to be forced to come out and compete.”
