Dallas Cowboys cornerback Bryan McCann was arrested by Dallas police early Saturday morning and charged with public intoxication.

McCann, a former Southern Methodist University standout, was taken to the Dallas city detox center about 3 a.m. and released almost eight hours later.

Details of what led to his arrest had not been released late Saturday, but officers must consider someone a danger to themselves or others to arrest them on a public intoxication charge.

Last season was McCann's rookie year with the Cowboys. He is perhaps best remembered for scoring on a team record 101-yard interception return in a Nov. 14 game against the New York Giants.

It's not one of the worst offenses, but it was dumb none-the-less and I'm sure his wallet will be much lighter when it's all said and done.

Cowboys' DB McCann denies intoxication charge

Gerry Fraley / Reporter

In a statement issued on Sunday, Dallas Cowboys cornerback Bryan McCann, of SMU, denied he was intoxicated when arrested by Dallas police on Saturday morning.

The statement read: "To my family, friends, coaches, teammates, and all Dallas Cowboy & SMU fans, My good name and reputation mean everything to me. I have never been arrested before and take pride in conducting myself at all times in a responsible and respectful manner off the football field. I was not intoxicated and did not pose a danger to myself or others."

"I am very grateful that, due to the Constitution and Americans' strong and enduring belief in due process, I am presumed innocent of this public intoxication charge because I am innocent. I look forward to vigorously defending myself in a court of law. I thank you for your continued support.''

McCann was taken to the city of Dallas detox center at about 3 a.m. on Saturday and released about eight hours later. Police did not release the details of what led to McCann's arrest, but officers must consider someone a danger to themselves or others to arrest them for public intoxication.

McCann will not have to defensd himself to NFL officials. Because of the lockout, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has no disciplinary powers over players.
