An Apple a day could keep Cowboys' opponents at bay.

The Dallas Cowboys are considering using Apple iPads instead of traditional paper playbooks and game-day printouts of plays, CNET.com reported.

iPads are already a popular gadget in the Cowboys locker room. Receiver Roy Williams always seems to have his out.

Pete Walsh, head of technology for the Cowboys, said his team and others in NFL are considering iPads to save as much as 5,000 pages of paper printouts per game.

However, Walsh said that one delay in the implementation of the shift is that the iPad isn't seen in the NFL's technology circles as being secure enough yet.

"Right now, all my counterparts [in the] league are discussing" the issue of how to secure the devices, Walsh told CNET.

Could the iPads be remotely wiped if they are lost?

Could hostile parties break into the iPads wirelessly?

Walsh, who reports to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, said the mandate is clearly to protect the Cowboys' intellectual properties.

"I've got that responsibility to the Jones family," Walsh said, "to make sure those [football] assets don't get out there."
