IRVING, Texas – David Buehler’s honeymoon as the Cowboys’ placekicker barely lasted one quarter.
The Cowboys won’t consider other kicker options this week, as Jerry Jones made clear after the season-opening loss. But there is legitimate reason to worry about Buehler after he pushed his 34-yard attempt wide right.
“Well it’s concern, yeah,” coach Wade Phillips said. “He kicked so well [until] that one kick. It’s only one kick, but I’d like to see him follow up with a better game.”
Buehler earned the job and the confidence of his coaches and teammates with a terrific preseason. That confidence took a blow when he missed his first NFL field goal that really mattered.
The miss might have cost the Cowboys the game. If Buehler makes that kick, the Cowboys can attempt a field goal to send the game into overtime instead of needing a touchdown at the end of the game.
“It definitely eats me. It eats me alive,” Buehler said. “I want to make them all and I wish I had another attempt to redeem myself but I didn’t. That’s just how kicking is. I need to make every one that’s put in front of me.”
But Buehler, who made 10 of 11 field goals in the preseason with a long of 51 yards, said his confidence didn’t take a hit with the miss. He said he tried to guide the kick too much instead of just striking it and will learn from the situation.
Buehler isn’t worried about whether his leash will get shorter with another missed kick.
“I’ve just got to go out there and do my job,” Buehler said. “That’s the way I look at it. I’ve got to go out and make every kick.”
