If you're wondering why the Cowboys had safety Gerald Sensabaugh lined up against New York wide receiver Hakeem Nicks at the goal line prior to the Giants' first touchdown, here is Wade Phillips' response:
"We didn't know they had a wide receiver in there when we sent those guys in. I think he still could have played it, but they had a good match up."
The Giants had a one wide receiver formation and had offensive lineman Shawn Andrews as an eligible wide receiver as a tight end. The Cowboys countered with their goal line defense without a cornerback.
"When they put that guy in, they've normally gone with a big package and he has to declare, and they put a wide receiver in with him," Phillips said. "And Newman was hurt at the time, too, which was our guy who plays that position. That was part of it, too."
Actually, Newman returned to the game on that drive and nearly broke up a third-down pass to Nicks that was overturned by replay.
Regardless, don't you call a timeout in that situation to make sure you have the right personnel on the field?
