Competition-wise, Dallas Cowboys kicker David Buehler had it easy last offseason.

But that isn't expected to be the case in 2011 after the Cowboys signed Kris Brown on Friday.

Dallas created a roster spot for the 12-year veteran and Dallas-area native by placing linebacker Leon Williams (hamstring) on injured reserve.

“I'm not worried about it,” Buehler told reporters in Irving. “Competition makes me stronger, makes me better. I'm looking forward to it.”

Interim coach Jason Garrett said Buehler will handle the kicking chores in the season finale Sunday at Philadelphia, but he did not rule out Brown, 34, being active.

“Anytime you can add a good player to create competition at any position, that's a good thing,” Garrett said.

The signing comes less than a week after Buehler missed an extra point in a 27-26 loss to Arizona, his latest flub in a roller-coaster season.

Buehler has nailed four of five field goals from 50-59 yards, with his only miss coming from 59. But he's one of only three kickers in the league that's missed two extra points. And for kickers with five or more attempts from 30-39 yards, he has an NFL-worst 57 percent success rate (four of seven).

Overall, Buehler has made 24 of 31 field-goal attempts (77 percent). He's fourth in the league with 21 touchbacks.

“He has a very strong leg,” Garrett said. “He's a talented guy, an awfully good kickoff guy. He's proven he can make long kicks and he's proven he can make big kicks.

“But he needs to improve his consistency. He's a guy who will compete and we like what he's done. He has to improve, but we are excited about his future.”

Having grown up in nearby Southlake, Brown said signing with Dallas was a “no-brainer” for him. He played for Houston from 2002-2009.

Brown has made 253 of 331 field-goal attempts (77 percent) and recorded 86 touchbacks.

Dallas had two no-name kickers on its roster last offseason, but neither one challenged Buehler.

“We want to create competition at all positions,” Garrett said.

Nothing like creating intense competition by bringing in the least accurate veteran option of the available candidates.
