Cowboys bringing 'kitchen sink' for Tom Brady

By Tim MacMahon

IRVING, Texas -- Tom Brady’s team hasn’t been held to less than 30 points since the last time Rob Ryan had a bye week to prepare for the Patriots.

Dallas’ defense eagerly anticipates the challenge of trying to duplicate the success the Browns had against Brady and Co. in a stunning 30-14 win for Cleveland in Week 9 of last season.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the Browns provided the blueprint for beating Brady. The Cowboys are studying the film from that game, but they can’t just expect to confuse Brady by using the same unorthodox looks and dialing up the same exotic blitzes.

“That same film that we’re watching, Tom Brady’s watching,” cornerback Orlando Scandrick said. “He’s not going to let you do the same things.”

There’s much more where that came from.

Defensive end Kenyon Coleman, one of two Dallas defensive starters Ryan recruited from Cleveland, said the Cowboys are “doing way more” from a scheme standpoint than the Browns did last season. Prepare to see plenty of Ryan’s most creative packages Sunday afternoon.

Coleman’s description of this week’s game plan: “I would say pretty much it’s the kitchen sink, to put it lightly.”

The element of surprise won’t be as much of an advantage for the Cowboys as it was for the Browns against Brady’s Patriots a year ago.

That’s true from a scheme standpoint. A challenge for Ryan is to try to duplicate some of the things that bothered Brady last year while disguising the blitzes and coverages differently.

It’s even truer from a perception standpoint. The Browns were 2-5 when they played New England last season, perhaps causing the Patriots to overlook Cleveland a little. That won’t happen with Ryan bringing the NFL’s second-ranked defense to Foxboro.

“The bottom line is when we played them last year, it wasn’t like we were rolling,” Coleman said. “However they perceived us in Cleveland, I don’t know. We just have to realize we are going to get their A-effort this year.”

The Cowboys believe they’ll be ready. They know their defensive coordinator will be.

“Anybody who knows Rob,” Cleveland import safety Abram Elam said, “knows he’s relishing this game.”

Should be fun to see what Ryan can come up with. This is around the time i think this defense has to take it to the next level. If they are going to be an elite defense, it starts now. Going to be a tough game.

Hasn't practiced yet, fiametta either...

Little worried after kosier didn't practice yesterday either..

That sucks. Nagy is his backup right? Dockery should be coming too at some point?

The bye got me out of my Cowboys rhythm, lol

If there's anytime to get creative and storm the barn it would be now that we have our secondary pretty much completely healthy. With the starters back there we should be able to bring more pressure, without worrying about having to pay for it as much.

How do you think Newman will play Sunday?

Depends on how much pressure we are going to try to bring, but i'd imagine he'll still be lined up 8 yards downfield a majority of the time and give up the underneath routes to prevent the big play. Give him another 5 or 6 tackles. Basically, his first priority will be to make sure he's not giving up the big play, and then to limit the plays in front of him. Its not the worst thing in the world.. he'll be fine. I just don't expect to see him challanging for the ball much.

I think theyll rack up a ton of yards underneath. Theyll probably always be nearing field goal range

I wonder now many times we can get them into third down. We might be ok if we get them to third down, I have a bad feeling they will make a lot of yards on first down though and frustrate the he'll out of us.

Time for the secondary to employ that secret weapon to defend passes that you were talking about.
