IRVING -- Cowboys starting cornerback Terence Newman and starting wide receiver Dez Bryant missed practice again Thursday with injuries. Owner Jerry Jones said Newman won't play Sunday at San Francisco but Bryant is expected to play.
Newman hasn't practiced since Aug. 3 because of a pulled groin he suffered in training camp. Though he's picked up his rehab work on the sidelines at practice, he's still not close enough to 100 percent to play. Bryant suffered a thigh contusion returning a punt in the first quarter of Sunday night's loss at the New York Jets.
Newman missed most of training camp before the 2008 season and was out for the opener against Cleveland with a groin injury. Newman came back too soon and played the next three games before aggravating the injury, forcing him to miss the next five games. Newman had surgery for a sports hernia injury.
"Terence has to have it just right and so it isn't just right, so hopefully it will be there next week. We're hopeful," Jones said. "What we're doing is just being ultra-conservative because he had something similar to this [in 2008] and we thought we got him back out there a little too quick. If this were the Super Bowl this weekend, he'd be playing. We would take the risk if it were at that juncture of the season. With the full season where we are, we're giving him extra time. The facts are he could go, but with the experience we had on him one time before in an area similar to this injury, we've decided not to push it."
Jones said it's the team's decision for Newman not to play against San Francisco and not Newman's choice.
"He would go if we asked him to go, but we're just using the experience we've had with him," Jones said. "He's not exactly the fastest healer in the world as we can see, and that sounds the way I don't want it to sound, but he is not. In this particular case, if we haven't had a similar injury before, we'd probably have him out here for the San Francisco game. That's not to mean that we don't have to have everything we can do to win the game, but we have a long season ahead of us."
Jones said he believes Bryant will be ready to play Sunday at the 49ers.
"We just think he can get ready," Jones said. "Every day we can give him some time off on it, we think we're gaining on it."
