Sources: Cowboys pursuing Rob Ryan

The Cowboys have gone after a big name with a big personality to interview to become their next defensive coordinator.

Rob Ryan, whose brother, Rex, coaches the New York Jets, will come in to interview, according to a source.

ESPN's NFL Insider Adam Schefter also cited a source that said the Cowboys are looking at Ryan.

The Cowboys have been searching for a coordinator since Jason Garrett took over as coach last week.

Of the candidates interviewed, only Greg Manusky has taken a job. Manusky interviewed for the job on Wednesday but he's in the final stages of joining the San Diego Chargers, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Ryan, meanwhile, has emerged as a possibility. He runs a 3-4 scheme that ranked 22nd in the league last season with Cleveland.

But with a new coach coming to Cleveland in Pat Shurmur, it appears Ryan will not return.

Vic Fangio also met with team officials but it appears he's leaning toward the San Francisco 49ers.

Miami Dolphins assistant coach Todd Bowles spoke to the Cowboys last week about their head coaching position before it was given to Jason Garrett. Bowles, despite being a defensive coach and knowing the Cowboys personnel having coached there for a few years, hasn't been invited back to interview for the defensive coordinator job. The Cowboys would need permission again from the Dolphins to interview for the defensive coordinator job based on league rules.

Paul Pasqualoni, who finished the season as defensive coordinator, decided Thursday to become the head coach at the University of Connecticut.

With the first two defensive coordinator candidates leaning towards other positions, and the interim defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni leaving for a head coaching job in UConn, the Cowboys are stepping up their efforts to land a quality coach.

On Friday, the Cowboys are expected to interview Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan at Valley Ranch, in what would cap off a busy week for newly-named coach Jason Garrett.

Garrett has interviewed DC candidates Vic Fangio and Greg Manusky earlier this week. However, it appears Manusky is a favorite to take the position in San Diego, while Fangio will likely follow Jim Harbaugh from Stanford to the 49ers.

As for Ryan, the brother of Jets’ coach Rex Ryan and the son of former Eagles and Cardinals coach Buddy Ryan, he runs a 3-4 scheme that would fit the Cowboys’ plans.

Ryan’s defense in Cleveland this past season ranked 22nd in the NFL. He was a likely candidate for the Browns’ head coaching position after Eric Mangini was fired. But with Cleveland hiring Pat Shurmur on Thursday, it doesn’t appear Ryan will be in the Browns’ plans. Obviously, the Cowboys asked and received permission to interview Ryan.

Also this week, Jason Garrett met with former tight end Dan Campbell about a possible assistant offensive line position and Univ. of Alabama tight ends/special teams coach Bobby Williams was also in town. Williams and Garrett worked together for two seasons under Nick Saban with the Dolphins.

Rob Ryan would bring an energy to D

Archer
IRVING, Texas -- According to multiple sources, Rob Ryan is the latest defensive coordinator to have caught Jason Garrett’s eye.

Ryan is the third coordinator Garrett will meet with this week. Garrett spoke with Vic Fangio on Monday and Greg Manusky on Wednesday. Manusky is reportedly set to join San Diego and Fangio could follow Jim Harbaugh to San Francisco. Paul Pasqualoni, who ended the season as the defensive coordinator, to the University of Connecticut.

The twin brother of the New York Jets coach, Rex, Ryan just finished his second season as Cleveland’s defensive coordinator after spending five years calling Oakland’s defense (2004-08).

Earlier in the day I wondered if Ryan was a Garrett kind of guy, and apparently he could be. He has worked for Bill Belichick and Eric Mangini, two of the straightest-arrow coaches in the NFL, in New England and Cleveland. His style might be the perfect balance to Garrett’s way and bring some energy to a defense that needs to be re-energized.

Ryan’s 3-4 is different than Wade Phillips’ 3-4. He is more of a two-gap scheme, like what Bill Parcells had with the Cowboys, than Phillips’ scheme. But his time with Belichick should tell you he can and will have all sorts of different looks to confuse offenses.

Cleveland’s defense improved in 2010 from 2009. They went from allowing 389.3 yards per game (31st in the league) to 350, which was good for 22nd. They went from allowing 23.4 points per game to 20.8. They intercepted nine more passes and recovered three more fumbles. The sack total dipped from 40 to 29.

It would create an interesting dynamic considering how disliked his father, Buddy, is by a segment of Cowboys fans. And there would be a Ryan Bowl next year with the Cowboys playing the Jets at New Meadowlands Stadium.

Rob Ryan will interview with Cowboys for DC spot

Gerry Fraley / Reporter

Rob Ryan, apparently no longer wanted in Cleveland, will interview with the Dallas Cowboys for their defensive-coordinator opening, two NFL sources said tonight.

Ryan has one year remaining on his contract with the Browns, but he has not been seen at the team's complex since the end of the season. He was conspicious by his absence when new head coach Pat Shurmur was introduced today.

Rob Ryan is one half of a flamboyant pair of twin brothers in the NFL. Rex Ryan, a former defensive coordinator, is head coach of the New York Jets.

Rob Ryan advocates the 3-4 defense, which the Cowboys use. He has been an NFL coordinator for seven seasons: five with Oakland and two with Cleveland. The Browns this season finished 15th in offensive points allowed with 19.4 per game and 22nd in yards allowed with 350.1 per game.

The Cowboys believe they will not be able to add any of their top three candidates. Paul Pasqualoni, the defensive coordinator for the final eight games this season, returned to the collegiate game by taking the head-coaching job at Connecticut. Greg Munansky is close to taking the same job with San Diego, and Vic Fangio is expected to follow new San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh to the 49ers.

I'd like to think those weren't our top three candidates. Certainly not that bum Pasqualoni.

Ryan has to be higher on the list than that. But then why wait to interview him? It should have been done already.

I'm sure the browns didnt give permission to anyone to interview Ryan until they resovled their HC situation. He had a yr left on his contract. Depending on who the HC was, they might have wanted to retain him.

Good thinking. You're probably right.

I'd salute the move just for the attitude he'd bring to the defense.

And I always thought he was a better coordinator than his defenses showed. He's almost been a little short on talent.

I've heard the Ryans are bad interviews. That's why it supposedly took Rex several chances to land a head coaching gig and I've heard the same with Rob.

Garrett may talk way over his head.

I'd be alright with this fat bastard. Anything not named Pasqualoni and ties to Mr. Fix it is an improvement

Don't let him leave the building, Red.

Why the fuck all the hype over Rob Ryan?

In 2004, his defense was ranked #30 overall and #31 in points allowed.

In 2005, his defense was ranked #27 overall and #25 in points allowed.

In 2006, his defense was ranked #30 overall and #18 in points allowed.

In 2007, his defense was ranked #22 overall and #26 in points allowed.

In 2008, his defense was ranked #27 overall and #24 in points allowed.

In 2009, his defense was ranked #31 overall and #22 in points allowed.

In 2010, his defense was ranked #22 overall and #13 in points allowed.

So tell me why once again, we want this fat fuck aside from him being the spawn of Bounty Bowl Buddy? The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, but when you think of the Ryans, it's more the shit doesn't fall far from the asshole.

I mean how could this have escapeed the GREATEST FOOTBALL MIND OF ALL TIME?

I wouldn't mind it, whatever Jason decides is good with me, too many good candidates going around right now.

Ryan would definitely bring energy to this defense, he's an aggressive coach.

I'd like it.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Tom Brady and Drew Brees both had their worst games of the season against Cleveland this year.

He's coached in Oakland and Cleveland. Two God awful franchises.

I think he's better than that. And he certainly has enough good influences on his resume.

Bounty Bowl means nothing to me. Probably because I'm an adult.
