Dallas Morning News Cowboys writer David Moore chatted with readers and answered questions about the team as they prepare for their season opener against the Washington Redskins. Here are some highlights:
Why in the world would the Cowboys cut both Bryan McCann and Cletis Gordon?
Phillips will give his explanation this afternoon at his first press conference since the cuts. It was a surprise. But I'd say the potential of the two young safeties they kept -rookie free agents Barry Church and Danny McCray – and the ability of both to contribute on special teams immediately gave them the edge over McCann and Gordon.
Does the Patrick Crayton trade show that the Cowboys are confident in Dez Bryant's chances of shining this season or a dislike for Crayton and his contract?
A little of both. The Cowboys have poured so much invested in the top three receivers – Roy Williams, Dez Bryant and the money it will take to sign Miles Austin long term – that the club didn't want to pour a lot of money into the fourth and fifth receiver spots. They were willing to keep either Crayton ($2 million) or Sam Hurd ($1.78 million) but not both.
As for Bryant shining this season, the Cowboys are convinced that will happen. That's another reason Crayton was traded. Every pass he caught this season would have been one that Bryant did not.
Do you think we address our offensive line issues in the first round of next year’s draft?
The Cowboys have not used a first round pick on an offensive lineman with Jerry Jones as owner. I don't know that they'll start next year. But there could be one thing that alters Jones' philosophy.
I believe part of the reason the Cowboys haven't taken an offensive linemen is because Jones doesn't want to pay that much to an unproven player who's not in a skill position. If a rookie wage scale is put into place, Jones might be more willing to look at an offensive lineman in the first.
If the Cowboys don't take an offensive lineman in the first, they need to come back in the second or third – or both – with someone at that position. They must get younger there.
What is Kyle Kosier status for the first game?
It's unlikely he'll play this week. Get ready for Montrae Holland . There's a chance Kosier will be back in Week 2 against Chicago.
