Coordinator Jason Garrett on Cowboys offense: 'We're not doing this to be democratic'

By DAVID MOORE / The Dallas Morning News
There's a debate these days about whether or not the Cowboys offense has an identity. It's been suggested that offensive coordinator Jason Garrett is too democratic for his own good.
It's not an argument he buys.
"We're always trying to get the running game going, we're always trying to have efficiency and success in the passing game,'' Garrett said. "We're not doing this to be democratic. We're doing this because we feel this is the right way to run an offense with the people we have.
"I think we've had success with this approach in the past. We certainly lean on a number of our marquee players and then there are roles for other guys as well. It's a good way to run an offense, to attack defenses different ways. You have to be successful executing in the different ways you're doing it, and we'll continue to work at that and get better at that.''
When an offense is struggling with penalties and points the way the Cowboys are now _ their average of 13.5 points is tied for 26th in the NFL _ does it make sense to scale back, establish a player or two then expand the distribution? Is there something to be said for finding a player with the hot hand and riding him?
"What we're always trying to do is emphasize the strengths of our players,'' Garrett said. "If you look at what we do and who we throw the ball to, who we try to hand it to and how we try to do things, I think that's line one. I think the evidence is there. Then we have other players who have certain roles on our football team. We try to put them in position where they do things they're capable of doing well and give them an opportunity to do it.
"This is the group of guys we have. We like them all, and we certainly have guys who play more and get the ball more than other guys. And that's going to change from week to week. This guy has to block more this week, this guy has to catch more this week. That's how it works.
"We try our best to put our players in the best situations to do the things they do well and also attack the opponent's defense.''
