Cooley takes umbrage with Shanahan’s media openness
Posted by Evan Silva on October 14, 2011, 9:20 PM EDT
On Thursday, coach Mike Shanahan notified reporters that tight end Chris Cooley needed his left knee drained during the Redskins’ Week Five bye. Cooley has struggled with knee problems since training camp. Shanahan described the latest knee draining as “a little setback.”
Cooley vented to the media about Shanahan’s seemingly unnecessary openness on Friday, saying he’s “concerned” Shanahan would feel compelled to tell anyone about the routine procedure.
“Because everyone thinks, it’s drained, that’s a huge deal,” Cooley explained, per Rich Campbell of the Washington Times. “No, that’s not a big deal. Guys get things drained all the time.”
Cooley insists the knee hasn’t affected his play, and won’t keep him out of Week Six despite being listed as questionable on the injury report.
“It’s not changing the way I play,” he said. “It’s not all of a sudden worse because [it was drained].”
The coach disagrees.
“There’s no question about it,” Shanahan said when asked whether Cooley’s performance has been impacted. “It takes time to get back into football shape. When you do have recurring problems with your knee, it’s never easy.”
Cooley has been the ultimate team player this season, taking a backseat to Fred Davis in the passing game without complaint, and even playing fullback when starter Darrel Young missed time with a strained hamstring. Cooley is on pace for career lows in catches, yards, and touchdowns, but has played in all four games.
