Colts reportedly trying to trade for Mike Jenkins
Posted by Josh Alper on May 25, 2012, 4:42 PM EDT

The Cowboys said this week that they won’t trade cornerback Mike Jenkins, but the Colts seem to be hoping that was just a bluff.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Colts have made multiple trade offers for Jenkins, including one that remains on the table. According to Schefter’s source, the Colts believe their offer is one that “many teams would think is compelling.”

That doesn’t mean much if the Cowboys don’t find it compelling, of course, and, as of now, they haven’t been shaken from their plan to hold onto Jenkins. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday that Jenkins’ absence from offseason work isn’t going to force the Cowboys to make a deal involving a player who has been forced out of the starting lineup by the additions of Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne. According to Schefter’s report, though, there’s a feeling a deal could be worked out for the right price.

Jenkins has been up and down in his first three NFL seasons, but he’d be an upgrade from the Jerraud Powers-Kevin Thomas combo that currently looks like the starting cornerback tandem in Indy. At $1.052 million for the 2012 season, the price is right as well although that’s also part of the reason why the Cowboys are content to hold onto him. Jenkins could play himself into an extension with the Colts if all goes well in the final year of his rookie contract, something that’s a lot less likely to happen in Dallas.

Well, I'd want to know what was offered.

Didn't the Colts just trade a cb away for that Gronkowski guy we cut a year or two ago?

I'm guessing they'd offer a draft pick. Not sure what players they have that would appeal to us and be available.

It shouldn't be long before someone in the media alledges who/what they're offering. That'll be interesting to read.

RT @RapSheet High-ranking #Cowboys source explaining why #Colts may be frustrated: "We are not interested in trading Mike Jenkins."

I'm not trading mike Jenkins for a Matt Johnson. Opportunity cost, no way I'm selling low. It'd be like drafting fasano w/ a 2nd, trading him for a 4th, then drafting Bennett w/ a 2nd.

We invested a ton in cb's this season let's play it out and see what happens.

Dream on. He's injured and one year away from free agency. Won't get a high pick for a one-year rental.

So is Mo Clai, so we might as well keep him unless we get a steal....He will still be worth a 6th or 7th early during season too...Why rush to accept that now ?

Depends on what the Colts are offering. It'd help if another team could jump into the bidding. Because of his impending free agency, his value will only go down during the season, so if they're gonna deal him, it'd best be sooner than later. Even though I don't see them winning anything of consequence this year, Jerry probably feels compelled to field the best team humanly possible no matter the cost, which is why Spencer is still here.

Remember if we hold on to him and let him walk, the following year we would get a compensatory pick. 3rd or 4th more than likely.

Depends on what he is offered.

He would have to get a huge contract to offset the free agents we signed.

Gosselin:

And why would the Cowboys want to trade Jenkins any way? You need 4-5 to survive both the season and passing offenses. Right now the Cowboys have four they can trust. Trading Jenkins would give them three. If Carr went down with a training camp injury, they'd be down to two. It would be short-sighted on the part of the Cowboys to trade Jenkins.

Good point. We need four Corners.

I just wish the team felt we needed one Center.

Wait a minute. Is Scandrick supposed to be one of those "trustworthy" corners? Say it ain't so, Goose.

All depends on what freeagents they bring in how they perform and how Jenkins performs. Remember Dallas' dead money will be off the books a lot of free cap. So I doubt Dallas gets much in compensation if he hits fa.

GloryDays is saying we supposedly turned down a 2nd rounder.

I would have said yes and hung up Billy Bean style.
