On Monday, the Cowboys coaches will return from a two week vacation which Jason Garrett mandated so that assistants would have their relaxation out of the way in case the lockout is lifted and offseason practice can begin suddenly.
However, following Friday's hearing at the U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals, a ruling on the validity of the work stoppage is still not expected for at least a couple weeks, so it remains to be seen what work can be done.
Already, the coaches have done extra homework than they could ever squeeze into a typical offseason. In a regular year, teams would breakdown the final month or so of an opponent from the previous season, but already the Cowboys have looked at every game from each of their opponents last year. Garrett's offense has broken down Rob Ryan's defense, and visa-versa.
It is not uncommon for teams to begin game-planning their early opponents, and the Cowboys have indeed already begun to work on the New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins. It doesn't make much since to go further than that, since teams will change their tendencies in the first few weeks of the season.
A planning fanatic, Garrett is sure to have some projects for his guys to work on. But really, what can they do at this point?
