East Carolina wide receiver Dwayne Harris is tackled by Virginia Tech's Davon Morgan in a game on Sept. 18, 2010 in Blacksburg, Va.
One NCAA football coach thinks Jerry Jones got a steal in the sixth round.
Rice coach David Bailiff was shocked that East Carolina receiver Dwayne Harris lasted so far into the draft. Harris blistered Bailiff's team -- the Owls -- for 100-yard receiving games the last two years.
“I just know when we played them the last two years, he was their heart and soul,” Bailiff told the San Antonio Express-News. “I think they got a great pick. I can’t believe he went in the sixth round. You look at him going in the sixth and you say, ‘Wow. He’s a couple of rounds higher than that.’ ”
The Cowboys selected Harris with 176th overall pick. And despite the crowded Cowboys receiving corps, Harris is going to fight for a spot.
"Every player is going to come in and fight to earn their spot," said Harris who is 5-10 and weighs 203 pounds. "I don't want anything given to me., I am going to fight for my job and fight for my position."
Last year, as a senior, Harris made 101 receptions for 1,123 yards and 10 touchdowns -- producing a statistical output deemed impressive enough to be named the 2010 Conference USA MVP. Although Harris was East Carolina's all-time leader in career catches and receiving yards, he may be deployed as a return specialist. At the NFL Combine, he completed the 40-yard dash in 4.53 seconds. Harris, who fractured his foot in 2008, said he would be open to playing a featured role on special teams.
"I was always one of those guys who was willing to anything to help the team out," he explained.
