Courtesy of the kids at the Romper Room....

Tom Ciskowski was on "The Blitz" ktvt/cbs show last sunday.

First on the show, vid of Stephen Jones taking the call from Jacksonville offering the 16 pick plus their second rounder. Jacksonville guy named Terry: "Are you fielding any calls on this pick?" Stephen: "Yeah but nothing that's got our attention yet." Jacksonville: "We might have something right now ... we'll flip with you if you come back to us which is only 16 ... and we'll give you 49 our second round pick." (Stephen announces this to Jerry and the room.) The Jacksonville guy tries to close the sale by saying: "That's dead even on the points." Then I hear Jerry saying in the background - "that second round pick (sucks?)". ... (video cut). Then Stephen asks the Jacksonville guy: "Will you tell us who you're taking before we agree to do it?" Jacksonville guy says "Yeah." (video cut again here). Then you see Stephen with phone receiver covered asking Jerry: "You want to go?" Jerry says "No." Then Stephen tells Jacksonville guy: "We're taking our player here."

I'll go in order of questions posed by Brad Sham with Ciskowski's answers. I got tired of putting quote marks in but the following is all Ciskowski except for one interjection by the OP.

UDFAs: Scouts met the next day (Sunday) after the draft and ranked the undrafted players by position. From this point on, the team will pluck these ranked players by position "as needed," call their agents and pursue them. "If we need a CB, we'll call the top CB on the list. If we need a LB we call the top LB left on the list." is what Ciskowski said. (But the OP wonders - does "need" mean camp bodies, or to shore up a weak position?) ... Cowboys scouts are already having their national spring meeting (Marco Island FL) as a group regarding next year's prospects, to go over the good and bad of previous year etc. ... then vacation.

Smith: Brad asked about the "four players" worthy of the 9 pick and why Smith? "After processing all the info, he was the best fit for us. Young, upside, good kid. ... Our philosophy is - don't reach for need. But if everything's equal it's OK to take need." ..

Carter: Great upside. Blocked 8-9 kicks. Will be nickel LB this year, we hope he'll start for us by 2012. Hard to find three-down linebackers in college now - on passing downs you find glorified strong safeties in spread defenses. So when you find a guy that athletic, big, that can run (Carter that is), you take him ... good value there. Can play all three downs. Ciskowski wasn't concerned with his injury.

So many team captains, coincidence?: No, Jerry, Jason, Stephen, we've all talked about it. There's a certain type of guy you want to go to battle with.

Murray: Great value there. Often on third down you have a guy in there that (opponents) know can block or receive (but not both). But Murray can block, run, and receive.

Arkin: Plays with energy, plays like you want an OL to play. But from smaller school, it's going to take him some time - we're not sure about his strength levels. But all the intangibles are there. Guys like him play ten years in the league because they love the game and they're tough and they're smart.

Thomas: Had fourth-round grade on him. Good kid. Will play special teams. Inside nickel corner. He'll be a good corner. Guys such as Thomas and Arkin will ascend because the game is important to them.

Harris: Biggest shock for me of the entire draft. Had fourth and fifth round grades on him. Loved his Senior Bowl. Great value, not reaching for need there. He's tough, we expect him to play special teams for us. (Brad compares him to Crayton.) Ciskowski says he doesn't want to put pressure on Harris but there are similarities: both tough guys who love to play. He'll play some slot for us and do some good things there. But you're always looking for receivers who can play (special) teams. A great value pick.

Either Chapas or Nagy (probably Chapas): Had a fifth round grade on him.

These rooks at disadvantage because of the lockout?: What will help these kids is that they're the type of kids that will go back to their hotel room after meetings and study. It's that important to them. Whereas some drafted rooks might say: "I've got the team made. I'll at least be on the practice squad" - on the other hand these kids will work at it. Ciskowski singled out Arkin, Thomas and Harris as having very many of these characteristics in common - these guys really want it.

Tough call. Because I believe Tyron Smith is a legitimate blue chip player and at 20 years old, you're talking about a guy who has the potential to be here well over 10 years.

That being said, three picks in the top 50 is enticing.

They were probably going with Smith anyways at 9, and if they took that trade, I think Detroit would of grabbed him.

Then at 16 we would of had to take the next best tackle or go DE.

It is a tough call.

Dropping 7 spots in that situation is huge.

I don't care about the points being even. In fact, if anything, you need to sweeten the pot even more to entice me.

In hiindsight, and looking at how the draft unfolded and who we got, I'm glad we stayed put.

I agree, I thought of that as well. Getting another pick probably seals the deal, but I'm happy with the pick at 9.
