Tashard Choice and Packers linebacker Erik Walden became fast friends as rookies in the Cowboys' 2008 draft class. Choice, a fourth-rounder, made the team as a backup running back, but Walden (sixth round) was waived at final cuts.
Since then, Walden has had brief stints with the Chiefs and Dolphins. Miami cut him in September after he missed a block that led to a blocked punt in a close loss to the Jets.
When Walden became a free agent for the third time in his short NFL career, Choice called him with encouragement. Choice knows about staying patient, playing behind Marion Barber and Felix Jones the last three years.
“He lifted my spirits up," Walden said, "because I was down a little bit.”
Green Bay signed him for depth in late October, and now Walden is expected to start at outside linebacker Super Bowl Sunday against the Steelers as long as his sprained ankle doesn't keep him out.
“I got nothing but respect for him. I wish he was here," Choice said. "Now he’s starting in the Super Bowl. He’s one of my closest friends; me and him really connected when we got drafted together. I hope he gets a ring.”
