Chargers got smallest impact from 2010 rookie class

Getty ImagesAlong with the Patriots, the Chargers are among the biggest power brokers in the 2011 draft with five of the first 89 picks.
Chargers G.M. A.J. Smith hopes that he can get more production out of his ’11 class than he did last year. According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers ’10 draft class had fewer snaps than any other team last season.
Only two of San Diego’s picks even played — running back Ryan Mathews and defensive tackle Cam Thomas — combining for 370 snaps. Injuries were a problem for three of San Diego’s six picks. The lack of playing time is also indicative of a class where only two players were taken in the first four rounds.
A lack of early picks has become somewhat typical for the Chargers. Only the Redskins have made fewer picks in the first three rounds of the draft over the last three years, according to Acee.
Smith was on a roll with his draft picks in the middle of last decade, but hasn’t hit as many home runs of late. He’ll get a few more swings at the plate than usual this year.
