Chad Jones Runs 4.84 40, Says Long-Term Goal is to Play for New York Giants

By Dan Benton

Former LSU defensive back Chad Jones turned 23-years-old yesterday, and as Giants 101 reported earlier in the day, he planned to celebrate by running his first timed 40-yards dash. This attempt came only 15 months after not only nearly losing his leg, but nearly losing his life after a horrific single-car accident in New Orleans.

There were few signs from that crash remaining on Wednesday evening, however. With family, friends and several others in attendance, Jones burst out of his stance and crossed the 40-yard mark at a clocked time of 4.84.

"I won’t say I’m satisfied. The short-term goal, yeah I’m very satisfied with what I did today. But my long-term goal is to be on the field, to be a New York Giant in full uniform. So I’m still hungry. I’m still trying to fight for the goal which is being a New York Giant, a full-time football player," Jones said.

Jones ran a 4.57 40 at the NFL combine, so to think he's that close to his pre-draft numbers with six months of rehab remaining is remarkable.

What was once thought impossible now seems entirely possible. Jones is on schedule to be a part of the New York Giants in 2012 and it's very realistic to believe his determination will eventually get him to exactly where he wants to be: on the field wearing a Giants uniform in a game that actually counts.

Remember this kid? Incredible story. I thought he'd never play again.

4.84? That's about what the Cowboys Safeties run, especially if you average in Barry Church.

Embarrassing isn't it? What's our safeties excuse.

After what happened to this kid he runs that. Amazing after being told he may never play football again.

Jones was also very good baseball player at LSU. If football is too big of a risk for him maybe he can try to make it in baseball.
