Center Andre Gurode deserved better, hope underpaid nose tackle Jay Ratliff is paying attention

The Cowboys had every right to make the decision they did with center Andre Gurode.

For simply football and financial reasons, they are probably right in the decision they made to part ways with Gurode and give the job to Phil Costa, who is younger, more athletic and cheaper.

Still the five-time Pro Bowler Gurode deserved a better send off.

There is no easy way to fire somebody. But having him travel with the team to Minnesota for the Vikings game and then letting him sit and watch in limbo was no the right way to handle it.

The Cowboys didnt just decide when they got to Minnesota that they wanted to part ways with Gurode. This is something that has been brewing for weeks.

Gurode gave up blood for this franchise (remember the stomping by Albert Haynesworth). He deserved better than to twist in the wind at his locker on Monday while his teammates went out to practice.

This should serve as a example to fans the next time a player holds out for more money. A signed contract means nothing to the team when you get old and your skills diminish. It should mean nothing to a player when they have outplayed their deal.

I hope nose tackle Jay Ratliff was paying attention because he is getting severely underpaid at a position that takes a toll on his body.

Ratliff has made three straight Pro Bowls and is giving his best years to the Cowboys at a bargain price. By the time his deal is up in two years, they are likely to say he doesn't have it anymore.

Consider that Ratliff is due to make $3.75 million and $4.8 million in base salaries in 2011 and 2012. Cornerback Orlando Scandrick who has yet to crack the starting lineup let alone be named to the Pro Bowl team will get $10 million in guaranteed money during that time.

The Cowboys are quick to tout the message being sent in lockerroom by the Gurode decision about competition and playing the best player regardless of name, pedigree or salary.

Hope Ratliff is paying attention to the message being sent about why you need to get all you can when you can.

At least Gurode was being paid like a Pro Bowler when he got cut.

Ratliff is not severely underpaid. In fact he may be overpaid. His performance last yr wasnt that good, and he's been awful in these last two preseason games.

Agreed.

Want the green? Get hungry and play better. I haven't liked his play for the past two years.

These guys like hill, taylor and Watkins do nothing but bag on these guys. Even when we are winning they bag on them.

But when something like this happens they are all of a sudden protective of him.

Newy Scruggs in 03 was running around declaring parcells as a genius and saying what an incredible job he did and how it's so great to have a real coach here again.......then parcells fired a bunch of his sources who worked in the front office and on the staff in 04 and he has hated the guy ever since.

I have heard Clarence hill and jjt for that matter talk about how this line was old and overpaid and specifically point out gurode, now all of a sudden they are worried about his feelings...laughable. Hill did this crap with ebeneezer Ekuban in 03 when parcells deactivated him and then sent his ass down the river for playing poorly.....

And on Ratliff, he does look like he is struggling and for him to want a new contract now or for hill to think he should hold out now or something shows how stupid hill actually is. But all you have to do is listen to his questions at a press conference every day to understand that.

The Cowboys deserved better from Gurode, after coming off an embarassing 6-10 record, for him to come into camp out of shape, and purposely schedule his knee surgery, so that his recovery would coincide with training camp, and that he could miss much of it as possible. Garrett did the right thing. It was an in your face move.

One poster on another board said it best: might as well develop these guys that'll walk through fire rather than trotting out the old guys that are satisfied with mediocrity.

I think Costa could have traveled and maybe play against the Vikings, but I think Garrett went with Kowalski, not to just evaluate him but also for Costa's benefit to show him that while the start is his, he's going to have someone to push him. The competition is not over because he won the job.

Ratliff's performance has been horrible.?

Does anybody actually watch the players perform of do they just look at the results of the plays.

Ratliff was splitting double teams and getting penetration against the Vikings and plaid less than 20 snaps, he is playing as well as ever.

But hey he is now overpaid :Dunce

I think they started Kowalski because they didn't want their starting C (Costa) missing any more time than need be and for him to be on track to start the regular season.

I'm sure they'll be competing against each other, and that Costa could be benched for Kowalski at any time during the season. But the Viking game had nothing to do with fostering a competitive environment.

I bet you Costa doesn't feel that way. Every game and every practice under Garrett is fostering a competitve environment.

Reminds me alot of that Jimmy Johnson guy

Exactly. Jones regrets how things went down with Johnson, and I'm sure if he had it to do all over again, he'd do things differently. Well he sort of has a second chance in Garrett. Garrett's bearing must remind him of Jimmy Johnson.
