Dez Bryant seems to be the pure definition of the term “Wild Card.” You see a great catch here, an amazing run there and then leaps over two defenders for a touchdown.
But then again, as we’ve written and discussed all week long – and really since he was drafted a year ago – is that it’s always something with him. Never anything major, but something. And sure, we in the media can take some blame for that because it’s being reported.
But if it’s not his refusal to initial in rookie hazing and pick up a veteran’s shoulder pads, or stuck with some outrageous dinner bill, then he’s involved in a shopping mall incident, similar to what most kids have experienced at some point, but usually when they’re about 16 years old.
Now we hear that Deion Sanders has cut ties with him. Don’t know what’s going on there but apparently even he’s had enough.
Yeah, if I’m the Cowboys I’m worried about Dez. Not only because it seems like he’s always going to have something going on like this, but it’s not like he has proven he can stay healthy either. Just like the off-field incidents, you can make the same claim that he’s always got something going on with injuries. Give him credit for playing through things, but again, it’s always something.
Maybe you don’t like Roy Williams’ production vs. his contract, but do you really want to part ways with a veteran like that right now? As great as Dez can be, it doesn’t come without a price and a risk.
With Roy, you’ve got a veteran player who was having a great start last year when Tony Romo was healthy. He’s big, strong and physical and he’s been good in the red zone. No, Roy Williams isn’t a special receiver right now, and not sure he ever was.
But with Dez being . . . well Dez, I think the Cowboys would be crazy to part ways with Roy Williams and put any more faith in this guy than they’ve already done. The worst thing that can happen is to have too many good receivers on this team.
