Taylor: Cam Newton isn't a wise pick for the Cowboys
Taylor: Cam Newton isn't a wise pick for the Cowboys

SportsDay columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor answers a reader's questions about a topic of the day.
Question: Why not draft the best player available even if you already have a good starter at that position? Imagine what we could get for a Cam Newton a year or two from now should we draft him and Tony Romo turns into a leader.
Bernard Henry, Virginia
Jean-Jacques Taylor: So you want a 6-10 team that needs help at defensive end, tackle, cornerback and safety to take a quarterback whose going to sit on the bench for a year or two in hopes you can get another first-round pick down the road? That’s not practical. This team has holes. It needs to draft the best available player who can help it win games right now. The problem with drafting a quarterback that high is that, unlike other positions, a quarterback can’t help you unless he’s a starter. You can’t use him on special teams or on third downs. For this team, it’s just not a good idea.
