Calvin Watkins: Cowboys getting calls for No. 9 pick

NEW ORLEANS -- The Cowboys are getting calls from other teams about trading the No. 9 pick of the draft according to a source.

Whether or not the Cowboys do trade the pick is uncertain but after a 6-10 season that saw coach Wade Phillips get fired there are all sorts of needs.

Stephen Jones, the Cowboys executive vice president, has said the team has to get the best player available at No. 9. You can laugh at that if you want, but it's true in so many ways for a team trying to get back to the postseason after failing to reach its goals last year.

Dallas is projected to take either Nebraska cornerback Prince Amukamara or USC tackle Tyron Smith in mock drafts. However, there is a need to get a tackle, with the possibility of cutting right tackle Marc Colombo, who is due a $2.6 million roster bonus when the league year starts.

Finding another pass rusher, outside linebacker Anthony Spencer who has underachieved enters the final year of his contract, seems to be another option but the best ones could be gone at No. 9. If that's the case, trading down to get defensive ends J.J. Watt of Wisconsin, Cameron Jordan from Cal or Aldon Smith from Missouri in the middle to lower part of the first round would be an interesting move.

Moving down in the first round could also be a cost cutting measure with the Cowboys who might cut payroll to get under a salary cap for 2011. The league proposed a $114 million cap for 2011 to the union which was rejected and currently the Cowboys have $137 million devoted to player salaries this year, the highest in the league.

It's doubtful a cap of $114 million will be in play for 2011 but the Cowboys have plenty of high salaried players in DeMarcus Ware ($11.3 million cap number), Tony Romo ($12.9 million cap number) and Terence Newman ($10 million cap number).

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said he expects his team to have another high payroll in 2011, most likely the highest in the league for the second consecutive year.

I don't think there's much to these calls. Just teams feeling each other out. Of course, it'd come down to a team coveting a player that remains available, obviously.

But I even question if that is it. Isn't it too early for teams to have their draft boards stacked completely?

Aldon Smith is not a DE in a 3-4.

Bad sign that this kind of information is being leaked.

If that were to happen I wouldn't want Aldon Smith, I'd rather have Cameron Jordan or J.J. Watt.

I think he probably meant Smith as a potential replacement for the underachieving Spencer. he mentions Spencer in the column.

I've thought drafting Spencer's replacement was a possibility all along. If Ryan and Garrett look at film of Spencer and think he stinks, the OLB is too critical a position to ignore in this scheme. We cant afford another no-show yr by Spencer, who's also in the last yr of his deal.

He says if we can't get one of the top OLBs in the top 10, we maybe can trade down and take a DE. He includes Smith in that group of three.

Ya know why? Because he's like 95% of the Dallas media. He knows next to nothing about these players. He sees "DE" next to Smith's name. That's all he knows.

Ask one of these guys a draft related question in December. They won't answer it. You'll get a "it's way too early to talk draft" response.

I want to replace Spencer regardless of the year he has this year. Can't pay everyone. We have to start finding starters in the draft. And the middle rounds of the draft especially.

That, along with the Jones' habit of bad contracts, is why we're in the shape we're in with the payroll right now. We rarely are able to adequately address a hole with a cheap solution. We always have to pay through the nose.

It all traces back to having no real GM. Not even a real director of personnel.

Trade down? Jerry Jones: Teams asking for Cowboys' No. 9 draft pick

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters in New Orleans, site of the NFL owners' meetings, that the Cowboys are still putting together their draft board and have not decided what they are going to do with the No. 9 pick overall for April's NFL Draft.

Jones said Tuesday, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, that he has received interest from two teams who want to move up in the draft.

Most mock drafts have the Cowboys selecting Nebraska CB Prince Amukamara

At the NFL Scouting Combine, the Cowboys interviewed numerous players, including Auburn quarterback Cam Newton.

"I wouldn't dismiss any player that's going to be in that draft and wouldn't express interest,'' Jones said at the time. "So much happens with the circumstances that are there, not only on draft day but how we continue our process.

"But I do feel like we're in really top shape, I'm going to really say outstanding shape, at the position. Obviously, a quarterback to draft right now is a future consideration.''

The Cowboys have been active on draft day before. Last season, the Cowboys moved up to select Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant.

So two teams have expressed interest.

Who are those two teams?

I bet one is the Vikings.

Wont argue that point, they are clueless.

My first thoughts were the Rams and Patriots. Both teams would probably covet either of the top WR's if one were to fall to us. New England might also have alot of interest in somebody like Von Miller if he fell in our laps.

I was thinking the Vikings because they might want to get ahead of the Redskins for a QB.

I would only want to trade down if we got enough picks to warrant the 9th overall obviously.

I mean we do need a lot of positions to fill, but I wouldn't want to miss out on a blue chip player either.
