IRVING, Texas -- Whenever Rob Ryan is introduced as Cowboys defensive coordinator, it will be interesting to see how he responds to questions about how much his father, Buddy, is disliked about a segment of Dallas fans.
For those too young to recall, we bring you two games against the Cowboys from 1987 and 1989.
On Oct. 25, 1987 at Veterans Stadium, Ryan called for a deep ball in the final seconds with Philadelphia leading 30-20 that drew a pass interference penalty at the Dallas 1. That pass came after Randall Cunningham took a knee on first and second down. Keith Byars scored the final touchdown with a second to play.
It was payback in Ryan’s view for the 41-22 win by the Cowboys with replacement players two weeks earlier.
“I wouldn’t even justify that with a comment,” Tom Landry said after the game of Ryan’s gamesmanship. “Everybody has his opinion on what it was.”
Ryan countered, “The last touchdown was very satisfying. I had it planned all along.”
Now fast forward to Nov. 23, 1989 at Texas Stadium. This was the famed “Bounty Bowl,” in which Ryan had money on the heads of kicker Luis Zendejas ($200) and quarterback Troy Aikman ($500). The Eagles won 27-0 and Ryan ran off the field before Jimmy Johnson could talk to him.
“I would have, but he wouldn’t stay on the field long enough,” Johnson said after the game. “He got his fat rear end into the dressing room.”
Johnson also said the Cowboys day will come after that game. It did but Johnson never got his revenge on Ryan.
The Eagles swept the Cowboys in 1990 and Ryan was out as coach after that season. For the Cowboys that remained when Ryan returned with Arizona, there must have been some delight in beating the Cardinals four straight times in 1994-95 by 35, 7, 14 and 24 points.
