Eric Edholm, senior editor at Pro Football Weekly, ran a story yesterday in which he discussed the future of Redskins CB Carlos Rogers. Our friends at Bleeding Green Nation had previously detailed how Rogers can't wait to get out of Washington. It appears that Rogers would like to remain in the NFC East with either the Cowboys or the Eagles, as he thinks "it would be fun to play against the Redskins twice a year."

Edholm argues that both the Cowboys and Eagles, who are popular favorites to go after Nnamdi Asomugha, could have Rogers as an alternative plan. Rogers is an unrestricted free agent this year, regardless of how a new CBA turns out. Edholm speculates that since the Redskins don't currently have an adequate replacement on their roster, they might go after Terence Newman if the Cowboys sign a top corner.

At this stage, this is nothing more than pure speculation. Dave wrote yesterday that "it sounds like Newman is being thrown under the bus by multiple sources. That $8 million salary and his age, 33, could work against him." At the same time, the Redskins look to be back to their big spending ways: "We prepared for various options and will be able to be as aggressive as any team in the league based on what the rules are," Redskins G.M. Bruce Allen told the Washington Post on Friday. It's unlikely that anyone would be willing to trade for Newman's contract, but you never know with the Redskins. However, if Newman were cut in Dallas, he might be a viable option in D.C.

If the Cowboys were to sign a starting corner in free agency, what should the Cowboys do with Newman: cut him, or keep him, just in case Mike Jenkins can't find his 2009 mojo?

I'd be happy with Rogers, at a reasonable contract, assuming we were to dump Newman. I'd prefer to keep Newman though.

But if we did cut him, I'd rather Rogers than spending a gajillion on Nhamdi.

Rogers is a good corner. He couldn't catch AIDS having sex with Ryan White, but he's still a good corner.

Ooooh, the thought of going into the season with Jenkins, Rogers, and Scandrick makes me feel woozie.

Not that he's a horrible corner, because I don't feel that he is, but it'd be frustrating as hell watching him drop the easy ones. On the other hand, it seems like we rarely get those easy ones thrown at us in the first place, so meh.

Long-time Washington Times, Redskins beat-writer, David Elfin, just posted a column on 106.7 with a rather candid interview with Carlos Rogers. For those of you expecting the Auburn Cornerback to return, don't count on it:

"I ain't never discounting the Redskins, but my mindset right now is that it's time for a change," said Rogers, "I don't think I've been as appreciated as I should be in that organization, not by everybody. I've always been the No. 2 corner, but I'm the one they put on a guy they want to shut down. I just don't have the interceptions like DeAngelo Hall has and Shawn (Springs, Hall's predecessor) used to have.

While that is true, turnovers are often a big reason games are won.

"My agent's real confident that I'm going to get a good contract. After [Oakland's Nnamdi Asomugha], who's going to get real big money, I'm the next corner out there. You hear that the Cowboys and Eagles are looking for a corner. It would be fun to play against the Redskins twice a year."

It's well-known Carlos is in debt, and I had heard that at some point he was living in Jason Campbell's house this past season. The guy's play definitely will pull in some money somewhere, though I'm not sure it will be the major haul he's looking for. With the Redskins fan-based already pissed off from 3 straight years of abysmal play, a comment about playing against your former team, that still IS your current team, probably won't be well-received.

Hey, at least now we're talking about something other than Mormon Quarterbacks.

Star-divide

Additional Note - 5:28PM: As I mentioned in the comments, Carlos got a raw deal here. He was a good teammate and player through the abysmal Zorn years. When he was due a new contract after the 2009 season, the CBA fell back to the old rules and he was tendered as a RFA. As Carlos alluded to, the team doesn't appear to want him despite his reliable defensive performance. It's true the missed turnovers were pain-staking at times, but how many times do you recall him missing a tackle or getting burned? Not a whole lot. Sure, it's a reason to pass on re-signing a guy, but I hate seeing bad blood spill over to the media. Too bad this didn't end amicably. It is what it is.

This supposed interest the Cowboys have in a starting corner is fan and media driven. I don't believe they have any interest. In their mind they have capable cornerbacks and enough money invested in that position.

Okay, I just lost interest in Rogers. He sounds like an idiot.

And if he's expecting a contract anywhere near what Nhamdi gets, well... forget about it.

I'd rather have either Jonathan Joseph or Eric Wright or even keep Newman over Rogers. I was never impressed with him. Over
