ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Denver Broncos are turning to Dennis Allen to fix the league's worst defense.
The Broncos have signed the former Saints secondary coach as new coach John Fox's defensive coordinator.
Allen served as New Orleans' secondary coach the past five seasons.
The Broncos originally offered the job to former Seattle and Atlanta coach Jim Mora, who turned them down last week.
The new staff will convene in Mobile, Ala., this week for Senior Bowl practices.
Sources told ESPN's senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that the Philadelphia Eagles also were interested in Allen for their defensive coordinator opening.
Denver ranked last in scoring and total defense in 2010 without Pro Bowl outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil. Dumervil led the league in sacks in 2009 but missed all of last season after tearing a chest muscle in training camp.
Fox also brought two more of his assistants over from Carolina: secondary coach Ron Milus and linebackers coach Richard Smith.
Both were on Fox's staff with the Panthers the last two seasons and both have worked for the Broncos before.
Milus served as Mike Shanahan's secondary coach from 2000-02 before stops with the Cardinals, Giants and Rams. Smith was an assistant in Denver from 1993-96, coaching special teams and linebackers.
