Orders new league yr to start immediately, but states the obvious in saying "teams dont have to sign any free agents"

Mort and Shefter saying they dont know yet if that means there will or wont be player trades this weekend.

Also not addressed is whether rookie free agents will be signed beginning immediately after the draft concludes.

I'm with the owners but, while I don't pretend to have a clue about law, I don't see how the NFL can not allow teams to sign undrafted free agents without clearly being in violation of a court order.

She can only order them to begin the league yr, she cant force them to actually sign people.

That said, if that happened players would probably win an argument of "collusion" and the owners would just be set up for another court loss.

It'll be interesting to see what happens. Personally I wish they just agree to go forward under last yrs rules and work towards an agreement before next March.

So you're rooting against your own interest then and don't even know it.

The league year starts when the normal schedule events takes place. You can't claim to have started the league year without free agency open. I'd imagine that would get laughed out of court as the facade it is.

If I had my way, there'd be no football in 2011. Maybe not 2012 either. But at some point we'd start over with a new group of players and a little sanity in the pricing for fans.

Yeah we know the owners will always pass the buck to the fans whether or not they think they can legitimately show cause.

But guess what ? Even if the owners get what they want from these negotiations we will still catch hell.

You should be drawn and quartered for such a suggestion.

I definitely want football this season, but a hard reset...a couple seasons without it...would likely be beneficial for the game and, more importantly, the fans.

Really curious to see how free agent signings are going to be handled now. This is messy as hell.

I wonder if some renegade team like the Redskins or Raiders might be able to take advantage of the uncertainty and make a run at free agents without the league giving the go ahead?

Them poor-poor owners. They want a new stadium and expect John Q.Taxpayer-Fan to fund it or they threaten to move the team to another market. Want to have it both ways: socialize risk/cost and privatize the profits.

Federal, state and local entities give tax incentives to entice/keep/manipulate businesses everyday. The amounts they defer or abate can be anywhere from thousands to billions, depending if it's a bait shop or a Toyota automobile plant.
Pro sports venues are no different.
Nearly every one of them hosts myriad other events during open dates and the offseason, employing people, and in the case of events like trade shows, flea markets, etc generating pretty decent revenue.
Do the "poor-poor" owners make money?Of course, they didn't want to put up a new stadium cause it was shiny.
But the local taxpayers benefit too.
It's far from socialized.

Per NFLN, players can workout at the facility, meet with coaches, get new playbooks and teams can conduct mini-camps.

Everything but make personnel moves so far.

NFL says players can resume voluntary workouts, meet with coaches beginning Friday

By Wire reports

MINNEAPOLIS — The NFL has told its teams and players to get back to football, at least for now.

In a memo released Thursday hours before the draft, the NFL said players could resume voluntary workouts at team facilities, meet with coaches and go over playbooks beginning Friday. It also promised to distribute detailed procedures for signing free agents or making trades and other roster moves.

That memo, the league says, will spell out the timing for the start of the league year.

Things could change depending on how the league fares in court. It is asking a federal appeals court to put the lockout back in place.

But for now, there are some guidelines to follow.

"Clubs are free to contact players immediately to advise them of the hours that the facility will be open for their use, to schedule medical and rehabilitation activity, and to arrange meetings with coaches or related activity, such as film study or classroom work," the NFL said.

The memo was released even as the court fight escalated over to run the $9 billion business and attorneys told players that a judge's decision lifting the lockout "is in full, immediate force."

Attorneys Jeffrey Kessler and James Quinn wrote that the league year "now has to begin," that players must be allowed to lift weights at team facilities, meet with coaches "and otherwise perform their jobs."

"It is our view that the NFL and the clubs will be in contempt of court if they do not comply with the order," the memo said.
