In the first half of the season the Cowboys were handicapped by not having anyone capable of giving their middle linebackers a spell once in a while.
Both Bradie James and Keith Brooking were playing too much because defensive coaches didn't trust anyone to replace them on third down, and rookie Sean Lee, a possible first or second-down replacement, was often banged up.
Now, though, Lee is starting to get some more time. He had four tackles and a forced fumble on Sunday against Detroit, filling in for both James and Brooking.
James says the rookie from Penn State is starting to become a valuable piece for the linebacking corps.
"He's been developing," James said. "Real good rookie. He's under our wings. Hopefully he won't hit that wall too soon. It should come in a minute, but we try to get a lot out of him. We throw a lot of stuff at him. It's good to have two guys like Brook and myself to learn under. We come every day, come to play mentally. That's the big deal. There's no way he'll learn the whole game in a rookie season, but he's coming along.
"It's been good because I've been taking hits on my knee. When he gets in, he's not hurting us too bad."
